Goodbye my Dreamcast
Saying goodbye to my 5th Dreamcast
About a week ago, I had a friend come over for a visit. I was sitting in the living room playing Burnout Legends on my PSP. My friend looks over and asks "what games do you have for that system"? He was referring to my Dreamcast. I took out my CD case and showed him. We started playing Soul Calibur, then moved on to Crazy Taxi. Next and finally Marvel vs Capcom 2. We must have played that game for six hours straight. But before we could finish, my Dreamcast started making a ticking noise. I had thought it was the disc, but it wasn't. It was my console, the GD-ROM drive was giving out. I turned it off and our party was over. The next day I turned it back on but still no luck. None of my games would boot. The drive would not spin.
This may be my last Dreamcast. But the problem is I have so many games, 28 to be exact. Some of the games I have yet to find a CDI or GDI (whatever the emulator uses). I have been using NullDC but it's not perfect, there are some games that won't play at all. I wish their was a way to backup the games that I have. I may buy one more Dreamcast. But I'm getting tired of replacing them. Since most of the consoles are used, they wont last long, and a new one is way to expensive.
How many of you have a similar situation? How many Dreamcasts' have you been through? I'll be scouring ebay, maybe I'll find a good one that will last more then a year.

If you have between $150 to $200 you could get a USB-GDROM or GDEMU, they completely replace the Dreamcast's GD-ROM drive and boot games from a USB drive or a SD card depending on which one you get, both have high compatibility. Instead of buying replacement Dreamcast's it might just be better to go ahead and fork out the money for one of those so you'll never have to worry about it again, or you could take your Dreamcast apart and try adjusting the laser. I've bought a few broken Dreamcast's with bad lasers which just needed an adjustment and they work fine now, but its very time consuming to get the right adjustment, you can sit there for 2 hours before getting it adjusted just right and you only need to turn the screw just a hair to the point its almost unnoticeable.

If all of your Dreamcast's only had laser problems I'm betting they can all be fixed with an adjustment if you still have them.

IVe only been through one DC..My original launch unit..I adjusted the laser an it was fine again. Then about 6 mos later it started acting up again. I have two spare DC.One i purchased off Fleabay. I did found one ( still have no clue how it got there) in my bathroom closet. Apprantely it had been there for years.? Works perfect to. I think its some of those older non optimized burns cause the laser unit to work overtime an that is what i believed killed my Launch unit DC.

the best way to keep your dreamcast alive is to remove the GD ROM and make a hd idle mod, so you can have full speed for all of the games audio and videos...SD's using the serial port are not fast enough, sadly

btw the Dreamcast is a very bad designed system, its a total failure in many aspects, I think the Saturn is a much better system , as most of the 1994-1997 Saturns still works well 2 decades after, out of my consoles (i have 14 systems) the Dreamcast is by far the worst hardware

Dreamcast is just as Robust as the Saturn, maybe more so. A little common sense maintenance like white lithium grease on the rails and they will work fine for decades.

Its not a bad design Koyuki. Tho you are correct the Saturn CD drive was of better quality.
