I have an actual GAME DISC of the Dreamcast HALF-LIFE that can play on ANY Dreamcast!!
I have an actual GAME DISC of the Dreamcast HALF-LIFE that can play on ANY Dreamcast!!
I have an actual GAME DISC of the Dreamcast HALF-LIFE that can play on ANY Dreamcast!!

What do I have?
Is this an alpha, beta, final prototype, or some unique copy of the Game?
Is there anyone that any information on what this is that is NOT speculation?

I have been a gamer for over 30 years and collected vintage game systems and games for about 20 years now. During the years 2002-2006, I was really into collecting all things Dreamcast. In my pursuit of all things Dreamcast, I came across the opportunity to buy HALF-LIFE for the Dreamcast! I was told it was a fully playable in any system. For a nominal fee, which I will not disclose, I could get this game. So I bit the bullet and bought thinking that the odds were fairly high it wouldn't play at all, but I loved Half-Life and knew the Dreamcast was suppose to be the first console to port the PC juggernaut!!! I thought cool, an unreleased game and even better it's one of my ONLY games I absolutely love for the PC"...

Once I received the game I immediately played it. To my astonishment, it not only played but the hour or so I did play, there were no issues that I could see. At the time I didn't think how this was possible or if it was even valuable or rare. Even over the years I have looked all over the internet to see how certain games and systems were doing value wise. I would not see ANY Dreamcast Half-Life games or info but thought it was just really rare.

.............. A FEW YEARS LATER (2012)
Because of hard times, I have had to sell much of my collection over the last couple years. I was looking into game values for the first time this year and when I pulled up Half-Life I saw that the port of the Dreamcast version was finally out for PC. As I read about the port I started to read the blogs. They were all talking about the that there was a copy out there that you can play on Dreamcast and that their wasn't. Most said it just a rumor. If I have one why doesn't anyone else??

I have only seen (2) two people total on YouTube that have shown that they can play a version of Half-Life on a Dreamcast. One of the videos on YouTube showed him playing the Beta of Half-Life for the Dreamcast that was actually (2) discs and the other video showed someone else playing a version on his Dreamcast but it was downloaded.

The Half-Life game disc is the following...
NOTE added: I can and will provide pictures as requested. I will also post when I put up a youtube video within a day or two. I know that most if not all believe me, but I can tell you this. I do have the game, it is on a disc that I did not download from anywhere, it does play on an unaltered and unmodified Dreamcast, and I have not seen anything like it on the internet...

• a legally purchased disc that has the Dreamcast version of Half-Life (w/ Blue Shift on it) that is actually PLAYABLE on any unaltered Dreamcast.
• I purchased the game back in 2003-2005 but I do not know when the disc was created. I am still researching when the exact date of purchase was...
• The disc doesn't look ANYTHING like what you would expect a Dreamcast game OR any game disc would look like. I actually have NEVER seen a disc like this one EVER. I will say that it does not say Sega, Dreamcast, Beta, Prototype, Half-Life or any words that help determine what it could be...
• It is playable on my Dreamcast that is absolutely unaltered or modified in any way. Gameplay and sound work correctly.
• I am assuming that it is a GD ROM disc since it plays in my Dreamcast, but I do not know. It does not have any familiar characteristics of an GD ROM disc I have or have seen on the internet.
• I have read where the discs can be orange or white. Mine has neither color on it.
• There is NO writing on it whatsoever. Even the small inner circle that has writing you can see in light has NO writing. There are only a few numbers. Even burnable discs usually have the maker name on it. This one has nothing...
• I do not know whether the issues that were with the leaked Beta are issues in this copy. The load times and save information are not issues that I can see at this time. I think the Beta was PC only but I have heard different things... IDK

I would assume that anyone with good mod or computer knowledge could manipulate or alter a system to play any version they want if they mod or alter their system internally. I am not saying they did this, just that if I can think they can do that, anyone that has ability and time to do so, probably will...
I can't even imagine that it could be a final PROTOTYPE of Half-Life!!! Seriously crazy thoughts!! I honestly do not have any tangible information of what it is... I understand that most will say I'm full of it. This is the first time I have ever put posts/blogs up, so I apologize if this is long...

NOTE added: I can and will provide pictures as requested as soon. I WILL NOT post pictures of the disc itself due to its unique look. I don't know what anyone could do with that info but I want someone to tell ME WHAT it looks like. I will also post when I put up a YouTube video most likely today, August 5, 2012. I know that most if not all believe me, but I can tell you this. I do have the game, it is on a disc that I did not download from anywhere, it does play on an unaltered and unmodified Dreamcast, and I have not seen anything like it on the internet...

All I know is it is rare... Whether it is special is up for debate!!

Thanks everyone for reading my story. Any and all insight on the subject anyone is willing to provide is greatly appreciated...

Sincerely,
Hopeful Gordon, AKA Steve

Also, there was another disc that somebody found this year of an earlier katana version of the game(Not Windows CE like the leaked one), which had a debug menu and was a much earlier version of the game.

Image

This game engine is also HIGHLY modifiable. We have about 10 or so PC mods ported over from the computer to our beloved Dreamcast, and I uploaded most of them here.

And if you are just wanting to know, the game was unreleased on Dreamcast as the decision to pull the game just 2 weeks before release was made as the publishers believed the system was dying already, and would make no sense to market for a dying system.

Fast forward 2003, the game was leaked to the internet and became free for anybody to download.

During the mid part of the last decade people found out how to run PC mods on the game on the Dreamcast, and people even optimized the game so it would load in 15 seconds, as opposed to 30 with the first leaked beta.

half-Life is one of my favorite FPS franchises of all time, and I have wanted to see one of these mysterious other versions for many years. The picture in the post above is one of these earlier non windows versions for the Dreamcast made on actual Dreamcast devkit hardware. It was scrapped and they used the Dreamcast alternative OS of Windows CE, so the porting of the PC files would be easier. That is why we have PC mods ported over.

Here is some proper history from the Wikipedia webpage on the game.

PortsHalf-Life was ported to the PlayStation 2 by Gearbox Software and released in 2001. This version of the game had a significant overhaul in terms of both character models, weapons, and more advanced and extended levels and general map geometry, incorporated from work on a planned Dreamcast version. Also added in is a head-to-head play and a co-op expansion called Half-Life: Decay that allowed players to play as the two female scientists Dr Cross and Dr Green at Black Mesa. Another interesting feature allowed players to use a USB mouse and keyboard, a feature previously unmatched on the platform.

Versions for the Dreamcast and "classic" Mac OS were essentially completed, but never commercially released. Gearbox Software was slated to release a port to the Dreamcast under contract by Valve and their then publisher Sierra On-Line near the end of 2000. At the ECTS 2000, a build of the game was playable on the publisher's stand, and developers Randy Pitchford and Brian Martel were in attendance to show it off and give interviews to the press. The Dreamcast version revamped the graphics of the game with double the polygon count of the original models.

Like Opposing Force for the PC and Decay for the PS2, the Dreamcast version was set to have its own exclusive expansion, Blue Shift. However, despite only weeks from release, it was cancelled; Sierra announced this "due to changing market conditions" onset by third-party abandonment of the Dreamcast and ceased production of the console itself. The Dreamcast edition was eventually leaked onto the internet.

That year Sierra On-Line showed its PlayStation 2 port at E3 2001. This version was released in North America in late October of the same year, followed by a European release just a month later. Around the same time, Half-Life: Blue Shift, which was intended to be the Dreamcast-exclusive side story, was eventually released on Windows as the second Half-life Expansion Pack. It featured the "High Definition Pack", upgraded models originally in the Dreamcast version, which overhauled the graphics of the original Half-Life and Opposing Force as well.

You do have a rare and unreleased game that a few collectors have, but it was leaked long ago.

The only version that was never leaked was the Katana version I pictured above. If you have that version would you be willing to dump it for our community?

As you can tell we love the game just as much as you do.

I even have the rare Prima strategy guide scanned in PDF format for anybody to download.

The funny story about this is that the guide actually made it to retail 2 weeks before the game was canceled, so there are a few floating around on the internet if you wanted to buy one.

http://theisozone.com/downloads/dreamca ... mega-pack/

I also put every Half-Life Dreamcast magazine article in there for your enjoyment, and it took me over a 2 year period to locate and have scans of all the actual magazine adverts and articles previews and reviews I could get my hands on.

What kind of disc is this burned on? Is it a GD-ROM like the picture that anthony posted, or is it on a regular CD-R? If it's a regular CD-R, then this is likely some kind of build we already have. I believe GD-Rs need some kind of boot disc, but I'm not sure. I've never had the pleasure of having a GD-R in my possession.

Ok. My laptop sucks. Sorry everybody. Does the post show all the way to my signature? ALSO, the disc has one side that looks like cd or dvd rom. That IS NOT the side that goes into the Dreamcast. The side that does is black! Just like a an old PS1 game. It is weird. So the leaked beta was able to play on the Dreamcast? Thanks everyone. SteveT800

This is the last part we can see.

"• a legally purchased disc that has the Dreamcast version of Half-Life (w/ Blue Shift on it) that is actually PLAYABLE on any unaltered Dreamcast."

And yes, the leaked beta was only playable on the Dreamcast, not even PC emulators for the Dreamcast can play it.

You can get the released and optimized beta here.

http://www.theisozone.com/downloads/dre ... dcres-usa/

And please, if you could it would be MUCH obliged if you could take some pictures so we can assist you in identifying exactly what it is you have.

I have never seen or heard of a black disc GDR at all.

It is starting to sound more and more to me like you got a hold of a backup burnt to a cdr. Any Dreamcast can play burnt games without the need for a modchip.

Anthony817 View Profile

Yes you can. If it takes approximately 30 seconds for a stage to load, its very early. If it loads in 15 seconds, you will have an optimized backup disc.

Blueshift was intended to be a Dreamcast only expansion from the beginning. Gearbox later ported it to PC and sold it as an expansion.

To my knowledge it was there from the beginning.

I always knew my knack for Half-Life Dreamcast stuff would be of use some day.

Now if I could only get the modding part down and port PC mods to the Dreamcast myself I would wield unimaginable power! ;)

Well, there are some backup disc's that you could buy from Memorex or other manufacturers that did have a black writable side, just like you would see on PSX games, so it could be a reburnt backup.

My concern is if this guy did buy a backup, if he got royally ripped off or not.

The fact it plays on ANY DC is a dead give away, GDR's need the system 2 boot disc. Sorry to say but it is nothing special. Pop it in your CD-ROM drive and make a CDI with DJ and upload it to see if there are any variants but I wouldn't bet $1 on it as who would take the time to dump a GDR with BBA and system to disc just to make on CDR copy of it if it were a build that isn't available on the net. Looking at your disc the black bottom screams CDR as there aren't high density tracks like on GD-ROM's. Besides there were only two types of GDR's and that disc is neither. You are excited about a CDR copy we all have. Sorry to say but value is at or around $0.10

Here is a much better repro that can be had for $10 any day of the week looking like a real disc but is just a CDR. If you can copy with disc juggler you for sure have noting more then a CDR as NO GDR will just boot and there were no GD-ROM's made of this. Sorry to burst your bubble.

I know from the early PS days of backups and (used to call em gold discs back then) you could buy CD-Rs that were Black on the read side. I used to have them they were a little more expensive..... mine were made by Traxdata. I still have one with some demos on it of my old band,

Gdr and gd-roms were made by one company only to stop bootlegs. There is a high and low density track on gdr and gdroms. The only difference is gdroms have a bar code that unlocks the gd drive to allow them to boot. If you can put it in your pc and it even picks it up as a data or audio cd then it is 100% for sure just a cdr as you will be able to browse the contents from your pc easily. A gdr or gdrom will do nothing but tell you to insert this disc into the sega dreamcast.

The simple fact that your disc is NOT a Sega Confidential GD-ROM and that your game will run on any Dreamcast says that you have what we already have available here.
If you did have something special like what we are all after then you would need a Sega Dreamcast System Disc 2, like the one pictured above, just to boot the game.

I am sorry to say that you did indeed get ripped off, considering you mentioned you payed an undisclosed amount for it to begin with. You may even possess an earlier unoptimized version.

I have tons of Memorex CD-Rs with the black data side, I use them for my Playstation back-ups and Dreamcast Bleem! discs.

Dang...

That PC mod that came out this year has nothing to do with this version other than using the assets from the HLDC version. Its a leaked copy no matter what cause it was put on CDR. No official disc's from any company would EVER be on CDR, they would be on a rare GDR like I posted, and even then they would HAVE to need a System 2 GDR for allowing them to boot in the first place, cause they don;t selfboot.

Like I said, this game was leaked YEARS ago! Back in 2003. Hacked in the mid 2000's and optimized around 2009.

The best version to get I uploaded here on this very site. All you have is a burnt backup that was made by anybody in their bedroom with a computer and a blank music CDR.

Thanks for the info! At least this site tries to figure it out! Other sites just talk smack! I have looked at the files. It is on windows. I paid $40 back in 2002. I'm fine with that. If I bought it today maybe a different story. The file dates are from 1998-2001. If you don't ask you don't know right? I'm sure I'll still have questions that I'll ask. One question is when I researched this on google,YouTube, etc. why didn't anything come up on it and also playing it on Dreamcast? Second, I was told to look at files cuz it might be a slightly different version with extra/different files? I don't know what files could be different. I'm sure those are stupid questions... Lol.

Also, can the Beta be played on the Dreamcast back in 2002 or even now? I know it sounds like in in denial(lol). Also, I said undisclosed in case it was some rare hybrid beta! I was just trying to be cautious. Lastly, for now, is it illegal to have? Thanks everyone! I do appreciate this...

I don;t think you should worry about it being illegal. These companies would never release the files in the first place. If the game is unreleased, it is a crime to gamers. It should be illegal to make a game and finish it and never release it...

Yes, like I said, Dreamcast can play games with no modchips from a cdr lol. That means even unreleased betas.

Your Dreamcast is a powerful little system and you can get more out of it by downloading emulators for it or homebrew here.

Hope you stick around we can show you the power this little system has.

Yes it can be played NP while looking at the files on the disc do you see a file called 1ST_READ.BIN or 0WINCE.BIN and we can find out which variant you have but by the time stamps say you have the one we all have ATM. If it has 1ST_READ.BIN you have a new version no one else has and it would be freaking sweet if you could image it for us and I will help you with that as well.

BTW it was first leaked in 2001 and then Tux optimized it in 2009. Tux's verison takes about 10 seconds to load levels and the initial leak loading can take 20-30 seconds so I am 99% sure it is the unoptimized version. I suggest keeping that disc sotred unless it is an build we don't have. Even then those black disc are rough on the laser as they are made of a cheap dye so I could burn the latest build and use that on a normal CDR.

0GDTEX.PVR is a file that's on every Dreamcast game (typically). It's a small texture file that (only on GD-ROMs) will show disc art on the Dreamcast's CD player if you don't have it set to automatically play games. So, this is the Half-Life build that leaked years ago. The fact that it does run in your computer is a giveaway too. Hopefully you didn't pay much for it.

Thanks. Deep down I think I kinda knew that already but once I researched the subject my enthusiasm got the best of me. I know I have asked (and will still ask!!) some REALLY basic questions. I appreciate a group of individuals that can actually look at a problem and HELP, instead of completely rip them! I actually haven't gone on a couple blogs that I posted on AT ALL YET because of the negative response I got on Wiki. I havent been back there either but I will at some point. It just sucks if you can't throw some info at them, they attack like sharks. I completely understand how you have to skeptical and know that many are flat out nasty simply because they are behind a monitor. It seems like its a mob mentality... Anyway, ALL you guys and/or girls HERE @ theisozone are the bomb, especially to Anthony817 and atreyu187. REGARDLESS of what beta or version I have I know that its from like 10 years ago, so it may not be much or any different from the leaked version. That makes me smile! I am definitely going be on this site alot and will continue to research the beta and if mine has some slight difference from any other. Hey a guy can dream right? I may not be really knowledgeable about computer tech, but I love games as much as anyone. All of you have proved why I should. THANKS again............. P.S. I still might be asking questions, but I can swear they will be easy for you all! lol.

Hey man, we are all here cause we love helping people.

You will find this is the best retro gaming community on the net, and I can vouch for it. We don;t tear people up like that, well, a certain member does and he knows who he is lol, but that is beside the point.

As you can see all the guys here responding to you on this thread all know enough about what we are talking about, and like to lend a had to others when we can.

If there is anything else you need bud don't hesitate to make a thread about it and ask away, its why most of us are here every single day of the week. I rarely take days off lol.

Try downloading that version of Half-Life I uploaded, I am sure you will find that the community made an already AAA title that much better and even got the saves working and faster load times and a much quieter loading game compared to the early scene stuff.

All you need is a 100 stack of blank music CDR's and go to down downloading all the mods.

In fact there is even a guy here that makes Half-Life mods for Dreamcast and goes by the name R4mbo or Dreammatrix.

So we are still gonna get Half-Life DLC for the Dreamcast is you look at it that way. :)

Anthony or anyone.... Can you guys tell me which version I have? Also, I will definitely download if possible. SORRY if I left anyone out when I said thanks earlier!! There are a few more I would thank but then I'll have to say sorry again! Lol.
QUESTION: How do I know which version I have? Is there a certain file I look at? Even though I don't have anything shocking, I do have something special! Maybe I have some special old weird black disc copy from some valve worker..... Well maybe not. Here's something that will make you all laugh!! I actually thought 2 different things (only for about 5 min) that both sides had the game. One for the Dreamcast and one for an exec who wanted to see it on his computer AND I thought maybe the black side was like that so no one could know what it is so they couldn't steal it at Valve!! Lol. I was trippin!! Don't tell anyone....

Lol.

Well, actually, you have the same "Build", that we have uploaded here, only thing is that s person in the Dreamcast community had taken and tweaked some things on the disc to load better is all.

What you have is simply a backup disc, and as you stated it loads on the system with no bootdisc shows that it is just a homemade backup. Sorry, wish I would tell you more but without pictures and with what you already said all signs point to nothing more than something we already had long ago.

Like Anthony said, you have the same exact build that's up here. The reason the one here loads faster is because the files were sorted on the disc. To put it simply, the outside area of a CD is read faster. Putting important files in that outside area makes the game load faster. So it can be an identical game, but arranging files differently impacts things like load times.

OK this might be a stupid question and it may have already been answered...From reading all the blogs trying to research this there was a lot of hype for what came out in Jan 2012...Why was that such a big deal if you could download it years ago...If the leaked version was easy to get who cared about the release in 2012..someone here said that if I got it before the release it would be just a scene rip..Would I be able to play the game if it was that?

If you play Half-Life with the 'HD" models on PC, it is the models from the PS2 version.

The Dreamcast models and maps and assets are different from the first PC release, the DC has revamped graphics over the PC version.

The PS2 also has better things, but the Textures on the PS2 version of the game don't compare to the Dremcast version, but the PS2 version has SLIGHTLY better polygons on some things.

So for me and others, the Dreamcast version is the definitive console version of the game, and even looks better in 480p via the Dreamcast VGA adapter that you can use on HD TV's.

Trust me, I know the guy that worked on that Dreamcast PC version released earlier this year, and he did it more or less of a joke cause he said the PS2 assets were shown too much love instead of the better looking Dreamcast version which has better textures.

This game looks great. The music is perfect for the Dreamcast.
