To bypass the anxiousness of awaiting the sequel to an unfinished journey,
this Syberia DVD release features both Syberia adventure game where you get
to meet Kate and start out the journey with her, and Syberia II where Kate
decides to continue her journey instead of returning to her life as a New
York attorney.

For those who seem to have issues with MDF/MDS files. Here how to get things working

RENAME the MDF file extension to ISO
Mount the game with Daemontools LITE (FREE)
Install it and READ the TXT file !

If you want to READ this from the VIRTUAL Drive, you will be able to make a ISO or burned disk and you will end up with a perfect disk image using something Like IMGBurn or even NERO

Tested on Windows 7 64bit and it plays with no visible issues :)

Downloaded this recently: it comes as MDF/MDS files + others.

To convert the MDF/MDS to ISO I've tried the MDFtoISO program and mounting/converting it with MagicIso/MagicDisc. Neither worked.

MDFtoISO reports the MDF file is not recognised or damaged. When I used MagicISO/Disc it started to convert but stuck at 5% creating an, obviously, 231MB incomplete ISO file.

The two part game download extracted OK using 7Zip so there was no problem there. It seems there is a fault with the MDF image itself.

If someone can get this working please share.

RENAME the MDF Extension to .ISO and try again
(The larger of the two files is the image. the smaller one is like a CUE file)

Thanks but I've already tried mounting/converting both files with MagicISO/Disc just to be sure that wasn't the cause of the problem ie. I was using the wrong file. Why would MagicISO/Disc apparently start converting it correctly and stall at 5% whichever one was being used?

The MDFtoISO program, which I thought would be the simplest solution, only gives you the option of converting the larger (4+GB) MDF file anyway.

Whatever the problem is I don't think it is a MDF/MDS newbie mistake like that.

I'm currently doing a fresh download of the whole game again just in case there was some issue with that. I don't see how there could be because, as said, 7Zip extracted the original two part download without any trouble.

The game was playing fine until a significant problem stalled it completely. It is an issue with the game itself but the question is whether it can be fixed for this download. That is unknown as yet.

Necessarily there is a spoiler here: in the first Syberia game when you try to use the second voice cylinder in Hans' office in the factory you get a dialogue box requesting you insert a 'Syberia1' CD. Using the cylinder should trigger a cutscene not just an audio sequence. If on reload you go to the main menu Cutscenes option the one that should have played is actually listed there. It is a picture of I think a young Hans and Anna entering the cave. If you click to play it the same problem recurs.

A quick search discovered this is a well known bug in all versions even when playing the game from a CD or DVD. Apparently it may be fixed by renaming or re-copying in some files in the Video folder:-

https://www.gog.com/forum/syberia_serie ... game/page1

Whether the fixes are applicable/possible with this download I don't know. But there is an indication that the no-CD patch that may have been used could be German rather than English. varettaja states all the videos are in German but the subtitles in English - I've not had that but maybe it is the issue ie. the game is looking for the German voiced video file when the game is otherwise English. Just a guess.

If I can get it to work I'll add another Comment later.

I installed this on Windows 10 and copied the cracks over the installation and when running Syberia it asked to insert the CD.

The imprecise wording of the instructions ie. "copying the cracks over the installation" is probably what is wrong. You need to copy the CONTENT of the crack Dlls folder ie. the single Syberia.dll into the main Syberia Dlls folder alongside all the other DLLs. The Syberia excecutable file you do just use to replace the existing one. Same thing applies to Syberia 2.

I have solved the voice cylinder bug.

Its a bit weird but on reading the debug log file the crash creates I eventually noticed the game is:-

"Looking for 'Video\C2_HansAnnaB.syb' "

That's the video file that should run when you mount the voice cylinder. Problem is that isn't where the file is located. It is actually located in a sub-folder:-

AN\Video\C2_HansAnnaB.syb

The solution is simple just copy or move the contents of the AN folder (3 files) out and into the main Video folder.

I've just done that and tried it and it works perfectly. Yay!

The game must either incorrectly create that AN folder or alternatively the game is instructed incorrectly to look in Video rather AN\Video. I suspect the latter is the problem and it is a bug that should have been fixed but wasn't.

There are five other sub-folders inside Video so if there are any problems with other videos playing then I'd check the debug log for the same sort of launch path issue too.

Hope this info helps others here.

I have been playing this over the past few week and I've discovered something else that may be helpful.

I lost my internet intermittently for a couple of days due to ISP issues. What I found is that this version of Syberia (TCE) will not run on my set up without an internet connection. You get no warning, it just will not boot at all. I haven't tested it but I'd expect the same applies to Syberia II.

I looked in Task Manager (Win7) and saw that there was a Windows system "rundll32" process that was using up to 80% of the CPU. Below it was the Syberia*32.exe and eventually I found that when I ended this the "rundll32" process stopped too.

I've repeated it a number of times and the same thing happens. It appears Syberia TCE does an online authentication check or something like that before loading and if it doesn't get it causes this problem.

I can find no information about this from the notes that came with this download, Microids web site or other sources about. The Syberia manual certainly doesn't say an internet connection is required.

I'm wondering about the no-disc patch being the culprit rather than the game. If others here could test to confirm the problem it would be helpful.

I'll have a look at the main exe, see if I can find the outbound URL it connects to.
Thanks for the info. Has to be said though.... I hate WinDSM.... !

Thanks.

That is only a guess about it looking for a URL before booting although it seems logical. But just finding it isn't going to stop it trying to do that. The main .exe would surely have to be edited to remove the check. If you just block the URL won't the same thing happen?

^ Thanks for the PM too.
