Any good retro space sim ?

Postby Garrom » Thu Dec 14, 2017 5:02 pm

Hi all. I'm looking for some good space sim for pc what is not online (like EVE or similiar) for windows. A 3d space sim, it can be styled as freelancing or military service i realy doeas not care much. Something from early windows era. It will be good (but not required) if it can be run as portable.

Do someone know such game ?
Thanks

It's not the same type of game your looking for but, I recommend you check out

X - Beyond the Frontier + Extension
X2 Series
X3 Series

Build - Trade - Upgrade - Fight !

I quite like these games, and you can set up trade routes and all sorts of fun with AI controlled ships in your Purchased/Pirated ships

I second the X-Franchise. You could also take a look at Wing Commander Privateer wich is more or less a somewhat simpler version of X, though that was a few years earlier and late DOS IIRC. Privateer 2 isn´t as good.

Freelancer is another one that features an Open Universe to explore with you as a mercenary of sorts. It´s more Story focused than the more open ended X-Games, but Freelancers trading mechanics are much simpler.

As for True Space Combat it IMO doesn´t get any better than the Freespace games. With the exception of cheesy live action cutscenes it took everything that was great about Wing Commander and dialed it up to 11, oftentimes it really feels like an all-out war.

If you whant your Space Combat to be More Sim-Like you should take a good look at Independence War AKA I-War. That one has you controlling even large battle cruisers and the games engine simulate how physics work in Outer Space, so when you change directions you have to take Inertia due to the lack of drag into account. A bit harder to get into, but a lot of fun once you get into it.

It's not in the windows era and it's a bit cliche, but give Frontier: Elite II a chance if you have the time. Elite is the original and is still what every space trading game tries to be, it's in my humble opinion still one of the best. Ironically, it actually has features that many modern space sims lacks. I remember playing Elite II last year and had the force myself to stop after some time. I'm an Eve Online vet and it's clear where Eve (and every space trading game ever) got its inspiration from.

Thanks for all replies. Meanwhile i tryed most of games but there is somethink what i cannot stand... Very complikated controlls. i realy want something more arcade style rather than sim style.
I already know about freelancer and galaxy on fire but is someone know something else ?
PS. I'm not unhappy with mentioned games but these games are simply too complex for me.

I mentioned some Arcade-Styles games above. Most console games have easy controls so Colony Wars (PSX) or the Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2 & 3 (GC) games would probably be a good pick - both emulators (ePSXe & Dolphin) work fine even on older computers.

Not retro at all but - If you can play current PC titles you can check this one out, I like it a lot: "Everspace"

I'm afraid my laptop is too weak for everspace. About console games : I rather move ship with mouse than use D-pad or analog stick...
I'm afraid there is nothing suitable except Freelancer (beaten already) or Galaxy on Fire (beaten multiple times).
