Need help getting a game to work...

Postby kian273 » Sun Mar 18, 2018 4:03 am

So I downloaded Battle for Middle Earth(the first one) off this site, I'm not new to this process by any means, sadly as I've never gone through making posts, thus I can't post links or comment on download pages, thus resorting to this method... The ISO contains a game.dat file for the crack, but then it has a vengence .rar alongside it, but said .rar has a file that when used does nothing except demand a VNG.dll which isn't included anywhere, launching without using such and just using the provided game.dat file, the game just hangs on the launching splash screen(game doesn't actually launch) and stops responding... I actually own this game but as my CDs are MIA in storage I figured I'd just download it and play until i can find them, but I need help getting this one to work, or at least direction to one that will work...

Is this the one you are talking about: Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth (3.84GB).

If not, you can spell out the link or spread it out to give an idea of which DL.

Try installing the patch for it. You can get at http://www.moddb.com/games/battle-for-middle-earth/downloads/patch-103-english

If that doesn't work on it's own, then you may want to try the No-DVD patch for it. Google search this phrase and it should be one of the first links (website name should have the word 'copy' in it): "LotR: Battle for Middle-Earth v1.03 [ENGLISH] No-DVD Patch" Just copy that over the exe in the game directory and hopefully that'll get it working for you.

If it still doesn't work, then can also try the community patch: http://www.moddb.com/mods/bfme-patch-105

Good luck!

Unfortunately upon further digging, I found that it's not an easily cracked game... (did a bit of digging on the net) so... I'm hoping a no-cd/no-dvd image will do the trick, given that the only no dvd patches on the net i could find were actual Trojans in disguise(it is after all a highly sought crack, but due to the challenges behind it, no one officially cracked it that I could find)

Okay !
1 - Game cracks get killed by Anti-Virus program - Cos the company gets PAID to do this.
2 - Anti-Virus Programs are a joke now days. No one writes Virus's anymore.
Malware/Ransomware/Spyware/BCMiners/RootKits.... < THESE are NOT VIRUS's.......

3. False Positives - "Oh my god - This virus is gonna melt my toaster... SERIOUS INFECTION BLOCKED ! Phew...", no it ain't.... It's safe, it's a crack by a RECOGNISED Crack crew such as Orion/Hoodlem/SkidRow etc....
See point 1...

4. Gamecopyworld.com - Only site you need for fixes old n new.

5. Sandbox programs (Google SANDBOXIE)
and check Task Manager to see if other files are called for....
You'll see nothing....

6. If you want a GOOD PAID FOR AV - Malwarebytes site is where you need to be....

7. AV Programs are made to make you PARANOID.......

8. COMPRESSED EXE FILES WILL CAUSE A RANDOM INFECTION WARNING !
Files compressed with a program like UPX/DODO/FP5 will get nuked by AV Program.
Even though they are 100% Clean and safe... This is usually down to a little compressed "Intro.EXE", which of course, according to AV a virus and kills the ENTIRE Archive...

9. We been doing this for years.

Once the game is installed is there a game.dat file in an installed location subdirectory?

Maybe you have to rename the current one and replace it with the one in the HOODLUM subfolder in the ISO. The vng-lotr.rar after extracted for me contains a keygen that runs under 32-bit windows 10 not sure about 64-bit. Doesn't ask for VNG.dll, plays music in background and has a button to press to create a new key.

vng-lotrme window.png

Have to copy and paste each letter grouping into boxes when setup requests the key found on the back of your game manual. The keygen's copy icon button click doesn't seem to work correctly with Windows 10 as no data gets copied. Requires manual highlighting of each group and ^C (copy)/^V (paste) data.

That's as far as I've tested so far. Have yet to finish game install.

Update:
During setup, I used a different path than the suggested default:

    C:\Program Files\<default suggested>
as Windows 10 doesn't like user's writing data to the Program Files folder, so I created:

    C:\Games\<default suggested>

Installation progresses and towards the end asks for a firewall exemption:

lotr-call-home.JPG

I answered No.

There is a game.dat file present in the installation path folder. Replaced it with the one in the HOODLUM folder.

splash screen.jpg

Gameplay changes the video resolution to 640x480 and is full-screen not in a window. I had to click on the splash screen or was it the taskbar icon to switch to gameplay.

haven't figured out a way to capture a gameplay screenshot it's not in a window. Windows' Print Screen doesn't capture it but gets the desktop. Click on game's taskbar icon to switch back to the game in full-screen.

Firewall exemption not just for calling home.

I see this game supports multi-player online gameplay as the Firewall detected pop-up states as the reason to add the firewall exemption.

But, adding the exemption would allow for both: phone home and online gameplay.

BTW It's true a lot of us have been at this a long time. I've played cracked games since mid 80s on PCs (we called them IBM compatibles back then lol). During this time, I've gotten exactly zero viruses from games. Lots of false positives on cracked exe files, but nothing that turns out real. The only virus I ever did get was from an email in the Win98 days. Gamecopyworld, as stated, is a safe place to get all the fixed exe and no-cd no-dvd exe files you need. I've used it plenty with no problems.

For me it stops responding during that splash screen and goes no further(windows 7 64 bit, game worked fine with disc, hence why I figured I'd ask if i was missing anything, and that keygen wasn't working for me, but good to know that's all it was... luckily I have my old cd-key, I tend to keep those handy just in case... so not like i need the gen...) as for firewall exemption, I'm never asked, nor does my firewall generally block anything(hell my AV doesn't block anything either unless it recognizes certain code, hence why I was reacting the way I was with the other cracks I found when trying to fix this... if people are certain that gamecopyworld site is safe I may use it since the one provided isn't working for me and hope for the best though...

@ zx81v2 I've been at this for years too, I've had countless viruses(yes I've lost computers) from trusting main group cracks in the past, hence why I'm cautious unless I know the site... which ISOzone has always been reliable... like i said above, my AV looks for the coding, not "this is a crack, let's stomp it" so generally I don't get false positives... I also wasn't using gamecopyworld's crack when I noticed that because it didn't actually come up when I searched for it, so I'll be checking them later...

@ everyone thank you for taking the time to help me, hopefully when i attempt this later(have things to do for a few hours) I'll get it working... will keep you all posted...
