Upgrade RAGE 128 PRO Ultra GL AGP 16MB

Postby AdmiralShlong » Sun May 20, 2018 7:18 pm

There are two versions of this VGA. A 32MB and 16Mb video memory model. I want to add two more 8MB RAM chips to my 16MB model and match the 32MB version.

My 16MB model came with my Dimension 4400. On it there are two empty RAM chip slots. Not unlike like the retail XBOX versus debug, printing double the slots and filling half. They even use RAM chips from the same Samsung K4 series. The ones the Xbox gets are way better performance and capacity surprisingly. End of trivia.

Now before I go putting RAM chips on this thing, I of course have to first get firmware and drivers that support 32MB of video memory. I'm having trouble finding out if there is actually a difference in the VGA's firmware or drivers on either models. All I can get is sale listings. I have a hunch there is a difference though. In my driver backup disc there is a driver for it listed specifically as 'RAGE 128 PRO Ultra GL AGP 16MB' with no mention of 32MB in that driver or elsewhere.

Should I just order two chips, cook those boys on there and see what happens? I could just desolder them if problematic. I would like to see the double difference without buying a new one though. They aren't expensive I just want to improve the old one.

Wouldn´t it be easier to just get a 32 MB card?

That being said AMD still has the old Legacy drivers for the Rage 128 Series of cards on their site. If it doesn´t detect the right card you can always force a fitting driver to install by using the .inf file for the card you whant. Not sure about where to get a fitting BIOS / Firmware though as you would need that for sure since the card would otherwise only know about the original 16 MB.

Though I have to wonder where you got a 16 MB Rage 128 Pro from, to my knowledge those always had 32 MB out of the box, AFAIK the only Rage 128 with 16 MB should be the Xpert 128, iot´s Rage Orion counterpart for the Mac and the All-in-Wonder 128 with TV Tuner.

The 32MB ones aren't great anyway from what I hear. I was just hoping to occupy some time and breathe a little new life in the old card. If I'm buying a new one one I'll just go 64MB for the price. There's an RTS I run that recommends that anyway.

That's good to know about the drivers, but the firmware still.

I don't know anything about it. I assume the 16MB version was never available for retail distribution and was only included with some Dell computers. All I know is it exists, drivers for it exist, and it was in there when I first opened my Dimension 4400.
