The System has to be modded. And unless you whant to track down (probably) expensive Mini-DVD Blanks you would either need a replacement shell for the system that accepts large discs or mod the original one.

Alternately, you could acquire a Wii and a decent external hard drive, perform a few magic tricks, and play GCN games from the drive on the Wii. Best part is, you don't have to pay a mint to use component cables with the Wii, unlike the Gamecube.

You can pick up a Xeno chip on ebay for next to nothing and the mini maxell discs are also cheap on ebay.

Bundle of 12 (3 packs of 4) maxell mini dvd-r - £1.99
A Xeno GC chip - 2.14 with free post from china

I use both with out any issues.

The GameCube has a major advantage that the Wii doesn't have - The Gameboy Player. And badassconsoles has an HDMI board for the Gamecube. There's even a plug and play HDMI solution in the works...

You could always get an action replay and SD media launcher card to launch backups, that's what I've used for years, means you need to swap out the action replay for the game every time but I don't play GC enough for it to bother me,

Gcrepairs sells a kit of it, by far the easiest way of getting backups to run

If you only want to play 1 game or a few the cheapest option would definitely be a Wii softmodded, you will need the early common white one, RVL-001(EUR). A simple basic 2nd hand setup is all you need and remember Wii like DVD-R not +R media of a decent brand.

The GC (chipped or soft modded) also emulates all of those ...but with the Gameboy Player it can play physical GB/GBC/GBA carts - the Wii can't do that ;)

I use my Wii U to play Wii games, my Wii to play Gamecube games, and my Gamecube to play GB/GBC/GBA carts... it's a fucked up world!

AFAIK that's only compatable with the Wii U version of Smash Bros and a handful of N64 virtual console titles... like I said, compatability is an issue.
