Is there a way to fit 758mb of data on a 700mb cd-r?

Postby EAZY718 » Wed Sep 20, 2017 10:28 pm

i need help on fitting dreamcast iso files larger than 700mb onto 700mb cd-r's.
i use toast on OS X. now normally if i select fit to dvd compression it'll force all the data onto the standard cd-r if its larger than 700mb, and i'd be up and running with a fresh new DC burn in no time. today i tried burning sega extreme sports with fit to dvd compression checked off, but toast flat out told me the file is to large to fit even with fit to dvd compression checked. any help on the subject matter would be greatly appreciated.

PS: i'v downloaded iso's from here before where the uploader has done special things like reducing audio quality and other nifty tricks to allow such large games to fit your standard cd-r.

DVD compression will change the bitrate of video (MPEG-2) that makes us a DVD. Dreamcast discs are not DVD so I don't see how that could possibly come into play. Even if it were able to somehow add compression the Dreamcast would need to be able to decompress it. You have a couple of options:

1) Extract audio tracks and downsample them to lower quality and reinject into GDI (or are these CDI), if available

2) Extract video and downsample or remove it with a fake file, if available

3) Go out and buy some 800MB discs

4) Go out and buy the actual game

I would recommend #4 and then #3 in that order. I would suggest you avoid #1 or #2 unless you have detailed instructions handy or already have experience with these actions.

As sort-of already mentioned, 99 minute CDRs are the way to go, unless you want everything in Shenmue 2 to sound like 8kHz garbage with a repack.

^^ good call. :P
@ op.
web search for 99 minute cdr's, you'll get a few results
also, there's 90 and 80 minute disks too, so you get the idea.
keep in mind some batches of 99 min disk have been bad, it was a past thing though.
and last but not least, the computer disk drive, make sure it can write cd's. (extended/overburn)
atreytu187 has uploaded an old yet reliable tool for writing dreamcast specific cd's, IMGBURN (on site) with drivers. :D
[edit]
and welcome btw. :spliff:

thanks for all the response. i knew about the 99min cd-r just wanted to see what could be done before purchasing those or the real game. what NoMention said in his response was the stuff i spoke of in my topic. about audio quality and injecting gdi's. thats an automatic skip for me lol. buying the game and getting those 99min disc sounds good rite now. time to find a sports lot for the DC. anyway thanks to all who answered.
