Retro3000.com SD2IEC Review Commodore 64

Postby JMMREVIEW » Fri Aug 11, 2017 9:07 pm

Retro3000.com sent me an SD2IEC to make a video review, I am not the best person to make a review/guide becasue I am pretty new to loading games from an SD card onto a C64 and I only got back into the C64 a few months ago.

So if you are thinking of getting one of these this video is perfect for you, if you already own one you won't learn much.lol
Constructive criticism is welcome!

Really nice device to play some games, make d64's backup and playing sid files.
But most fast loaders games and allmost all the great demos don't work.

For that you can better go for the 1541 Ultimate II+ this cartridge will load anything.
And haves many extra's.

Yeah a lot of files are hit and miss, I have 98% of the games I wanted to play working so I am happy with that but some people might have less luck depending on what games they want and what files are available.

From what I understand some files have built in fast loaders so they conflict with the SD2IEC.
But I have to admit I don't know a lot about this stuff!

Again a nice little video but I'm going to be a picky *BLEEP* LOL

It's not Ret-ro. Most people say the TR cluster in retro the same way you say TR in TREE / TRAIN. You don't say Tea-REE when you say tree, or Tea-RAIN, when saying train. :)

Spoiler:

I'm 100% sure I don't say every word I know correctly. Just something I thought you might like to be pointed in the right direction on, before your mates down the pub take the pish! :P

Plus, you said console not computer in the video - but I've already bent your ear about that one. :)

Again though, another nice video! They're coming along nicely. You're confidence is definitely building in them!

Have you tried upgrading the firmware on it yet? https://www.sd2iec.de/ have nightly builds. One of those .bin files mostly likely works on the retro3000 version when renamed correctly.

That might open you up to better compatibility? I'd email retro3000 first though, on which one to use. After all, you don't want to make a door stop.

I had looked at a few different versions of the SD2IEC when I was daydreaming over getting a C64.

You should get yourself one of these...

I thought you were going to say "it's not retro... it's vintage"lol You can't changes a tigers stripes I'll probably just keep talking the same way I always do. As long as people understand me I'm happy.

The good thing about Ret-ro (xD) 3000 is the most latest fireware is available on the download part of the website the way I showed in the video.

sadly my SD2IEC is broken but assuming you have the filebrowser loaded onto the SD card all you have to do is use an epix fast loader cart and press the run/stop and the commodore key and it will boot right into the file browser

I have a SD2IEC with a Final Cartridge III and use fibr as a file browser. Great for singlefile prgs, taps, sids and trackers, coding etc but a lot of games and most demos don`t work.
