Thanks THE ISO ZONE !!

Postby dr00p » Wed Nov 15, 2017 3:32 am

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to say thanks for this website! Been searching a full version of Balls Of Steel pinball for years since I did not had it anymore. Never to be found.

And tonight, just in a flash of whatever (English error), I got an hit!

And even for the Devil's Island table I never played but always was curious about!!

So I dearly hope it works, because I'm so excited I already started this topic before trying. But I reckon it does, since the demo I always played does work, so.

Everyone that doesn't know what I am talking about and is curious about a nice pinball game I encourage you to find out! The table Dark Side of Balls Of Steel is still one of the coolest I played, I think. And don't forget to get all the other tables, I never played either - look up Devil's Island here on The ISO Zone and see the Balls Of Steel website to see what I am talking about.

Take care,

Welcome! Incoming RULES block, but first, now that you've got BALLS OF STEEL, would you say that you came here to kick ass and chew bubblegum?

Do the boards look better on the PS2 version or are they pretty much the same as the PSX versions?

A little, and it uses files for music unlike PSX version which uses CDDA for Audiotracks.

I prefer the Ultimate Pro Pinball on PS2, just cos it runs from HDD without issues other than a MODE ON in OPL. PS2 emulator should do it justice
I also own the originals for PS1 and have collected the games since release way back when....

Woohaa guys! Thanks for warm welcome!! It's like a warm bath 8-)

Below a long story about I found out I already had a copy, presumably easier to work with modern computers

Yeah, after Balls Of Steel, Big Race USA is my favorite pinball from back in the days. Most of the other ones I know too, though not the Playstation versions.

Anyway, actually I did not manage to get it to work. The Balls Of Steel installs, and I got the (1.3) official patch and the (1.3c) unofficial patch. And it launches too. Though it stays fullscreen in menu (probably in 800x600), and loads the tables too. But when loaded the graphics are shifty, and the sounds is too. The dot-matrix looks color-inverted. Pardon my English, I hope you follow.

Anwyay - and I am a bit hesitant, ashamed to admit  - I actually did own a full copy already. I used to have the cd-rom. But that is long gone of course. Than, like every two years or so, I return to this game. Like a salmon. And like I said, I totally forgat I already had a copy. From GOG.

Curiously I have no recollection of buying it. And apparently I don't own a GOG account either (couldn't find old emails, nothing). More so, I thought that That was the demo version I was talking about it my opening post! Since I almost exclusively play Dark Side (table) in BOS.

Just for your info. My desktop is a Windows 7 64bit, Intel q6600 non overclocked, 6gb DDR2, SSD harddrive and AMD R9 270x GPU. And laptop is an HP Elitebook 8560w (Intel i7 2820qm, 8GB DDR3, HDD, Nvidia Quadro 2000m.
Problems I ran into was the shifted graphics and sounds. As well as the pinball going in slomo or superfast.

So maybe I would manage to get the versions I found here to get to work, had I not found the GOG version deep on my HDD's.

This post is getting a bit long.. But I would like to add some last things.
I had an copy on my laptop. Copied the files to my desktop. But did not work because of "not being installed". Which is correct, since I just copied the folders, instead of nicely installing the program (you follow me, right).
So I searched my register on my laptop for all entry's, and found the right ones. Imported those to my desktop, and presto! It worked!

So the difference between the ISO Zone (original) version and the GOG version? I don't know exactly. Searching around forums I found that it should just be the same. Actually I am wondering if my unofficial patch works the way it should (before I tried the GOG version) - But I am quite certain it does/should (I did install correct I mean ;)) .
The difference is that upon loading the menu screen doesn't go full screen, (or semi fullscreen I should say (you see your desktop, menu is 800x600, but you can't click the rest of the desktop). And no glitches. Apart from if Windows pops up something. ;)

So I got it to work as I just explained I did. But than of course I was triggered in finding the install file! And I did find it, somewhere on external HDD number 3.

So I am gonna post this in advance now. And immediately I will start to look how I can share this with you.
If I can't, please tell me. Because it is an GOG install file. Though GOG does not offer Balls Of Steel for download at the moment. Since about 2015 if I remember correct. This because some other party acquired the rights for Balls Of Steel and Duke Nukem and so (same thingy, you know), and pulled the download from GOG.

Anyway, here goes, let me find out how to share. Perhaps through Google Drive or so?

Sorry for the long post.
Take care all,

P.S.
Sadly, above means I still did not manage to play Devil's Island! For some reason this opens up till menu, but nothing more. Whereas KISS- and Dirttrack pinball does the same. Though those two also did start throught to the tables. Though the tables where also shifty like BOS: shifty graphics and sounds.

P.S. 2
The GOG version, the two times it crashed, also showed the same glitches. So that makes me think that a normal, working version is so close (in the original installs I mean).

P.S.3
Probably getting the GOG version to share is not going to be easy. Since I already get a message from the forum I cannot post links to external websites since I am a new user. In that case don't hesitate to pm me for a copy!

GoG versions are bodged, usually badly....

It might be worth you looking into VMWARE and emulate older OS's like Win98 on your nice fast PC
This will allow you to run the games in their correct OS (Even if it's emulated!)

Basically, how I see it, GoG slap stuff together, load it to check it works then sell it...
This is where people find the BUGS and crash outs... Or they just bypass the "Problem" by removing bits like Videos... (SILVER)

I'll download and have a play with this game, see if I can suss anything out. What OS you using?

Re: Thanks THE ISO ZONE !!

I use Windows 7 64 bit on a desktop: Intel q6600 cpu, AMD r9 270x gpu. On my laptop as well Windows 7 64bit, Intel i7 2820qm cpu, Nvidia Quaddro 2000m gpu.

As you maybe read, I am not familiar with GOG besides this pinball. So I don't know anything about them besides their name. I don't think this pinball is butchered by the way. I do use Steam, but that has nothing to do with this.

Anyway, I will look in to VMWARE, I hope this will help me playing Devi's Island. Hope it does! Thanks in advance for the tip.

For those that are curious about the GOG version I talked about just now, I made a copy by copying game folder, together with my registry files and a readme about how I got it to work on my desktop. I put it on my Google Drive. I cannot place a link now, since I am a new user on the forum. So pm me if you want the link.

P.S>
Seems I need to do a little more digging @ZX81v2 :) This is my first venture into the virtual machines world, apart from hearing about it. Somewhere, somehow, I should have a copy of Windows 98 or so.
