Games that disappointed when it came to graphics?

Postby VoodooVincent » Sun Dec 10, 2017 11:47 pm

Listen, I'm no "graphics whore," as I often find something to like in even mediocre looking games, but one game that rubbed me the wrong way was Quantum Break on Xbox One. Even though it runs in HD, the damn game - even on a 4K TV with Xbox One X - looks like it's in standard definition because of the grainy ass film grain filter. While Alan Wake had a similar filter, I recently replayed that through the Xbox One's backwards compatibility & much preferred the way it looked. Why do game developers intentionally make their games look bad with film grain, chromatic aberration, obscene amounts of motion blur, etc.?

Driver 2 had some very downgraded graphics, when compared to Driver 1.
There was removed reflections, very low draw distance, less particle effects, worse lense flare and other things. Comparing it to other games on the PlayStation at the time, it was not very good.
But graphics don't make a game, I loved driver 2 and played it soo much, Driver 2 is excellent, regardless of the lesser looks. :)

The original Halo had dated graphics. I was never impressed with the visuals.

Graphics never bother me... Gameplay doe's...
I have seen so many of these "WOW" GFX games.... All completed within 20 hours....
20 hours.... You should be able to play a game for 20 years and NEVER complete it !
GFX are bonus to me.
See Tempest 2000 for examples....

Life is Strange at times had ugly graphics. Now, when the style worked, it looked great, but some lighting/conditions/textures made the game look like it was on the PS2. I don't think that's a popular opinion but whatever.

Elder Scrolls Online looks like PS3 graphics. Fallout 4 looked like they just copied and pasted Fallout 3.

Pong graphics: block not a ball.

Yeah that's to describe graphics, it's what interpreted not what is actually shown how I judge on graphics. I grew up in the early games so I don't mind or actually prefer ye olde pixels.

Not really disappointed just so confused. Castlevania Chronicles. After Castlevania Symphony of The Night. I was not expecting Konami to go backwards in game style and appearance.

Gran Turismo 5. I don't mind graphics, at the moment I play mostly PSP games and I love old consoles like the Saturn, PS1, 3DO etc. The last game I finished was "007: From Russia with Love" on the PSP a couple of days ago and I'm currently playing Syphon Filter Dark Mirror.

Howerver... Gran Turismo 5's trailers were photo-realistic, they promised the moon and the stars. But when it was released it had 832 "standard" cars, which are cars they copied from the PSP version of Gran Turismo. It was jarring seeing a premium car racing next to a standard car.

Some tracks looked great, like London, but they barely retouched old tracks like Trial Mountain. You could even see PS1 16 colour textures on the trees. Especially lazy compared to Grid's forest tracks.

They promised 1080p 60fps graphics, it wasn't 1080p and it rarely maintained 60fps. Don't get me wrong, it looks amazing when everything is right. I think they were over-ambitious and Sony kicked the game out of the door after many delays. I would rather just have a dozen nice tracks and a hundred great looking cars than what was delivered. They should've removed the fluff to give a more consistent experience.

I have to clarify: Disappointment is the difference between what was expected and what was delivered. All the bullshots and marketing videos skyrocketed my expectations.

I'm much more about the thought that has gone into the visual design rather than the technical details.

The ageless, stark beauty of something like Asteroids appeals far more than yet another drab grey/brown FPS pushing more polygons around the screen than a Pixar film.

agree
the OP (VoodooVincent) thought IMO can be used also in mostly new 2D games;
with current tech, the 2D graphic should be simply perfect,
instead, often progs abuse of over-pixellated retro-style looks, non sense imo

Doom on the snes was a bit of a blocky mess back in the day although i played it to death.
Some of the wolfteam games on the megadrive had some dubious graphics as well, the octopus in el viento comes to mind a big pixelated mess that looked just wrong lol, still a great game though.
