Fallout 3 vs Fallout: New Vegas?

Postby ClassicGamer90 » Sat Dec 16, 2017 10:14 pm

I have both and played both, I've almost beat New Vegas (with mods) and I've played a bit of Fallout 3 until I finished the town with the giant nuke but that's as far as I got.

Everyone praises New Vegas but lets be honest, while it is a lot of fun and has a great setting its mostly desert (Yes I know they had different devs) Fallout 3 gives you chills seeing Washington D.C. destroyed, there are many things to see in it.

I have them on Steam and PS3, but I'm considering re-buying one of them on GOG while its on sale (DRM free).

Which do you think is better and why?

Well, I may be biased (especially since I'm currently playing FO3) but I have to say FO3.

NV is good but it doesn't have the same "feel" of impending doom that 3 does. It just doesn't have the same dread that 3 has. 3 is far more atmospheric and foreboding.

There's not much in it for me, loved them both to bits, maybe FO3 a little more, I'm a Nexus Mods fan as I'm sure loads of you are and get updates every day on FB, there's a decent high end mod released nearly every day for both games so it's still very much in peoples minds.

Played NV through once modded to bits and FO3 twice though 2nd time modded to bits, great fun and both on PC.

I'd say New Vegas. Every time I play NV it's a completely different experience. When I watch a lets play I discover things I've never seen before, it depends on the player's play style. The game is very organic and is probably one of the truest modern RPGs there is. New Vegas was developed by the many of the original Fallout developers and shares a lot of similarities with Fallout 2. Fallout 3 fell flat with its story and characters, but was very atmospheric.

There's a similar debate going on for almost 20 years now over Fallout 1 and Fallout 2. Fallout 1 is a shorter more atmospheric experience, harder hitting in a way. Fallout 2 is a lot longer, character driven and comical. So people who liked Fallout 1 will like Fallout 3 and people who liked Fallout 2 will like NV. Different strokes for different folks. Depends on your taste and I don't think there's a right or wrong answer.

Fallout 4 on the other hand isn't a Fallout game or an RPG. Fallout 4 is all about action and killing, although you can finish the previous Fallout games without killing anyone (Fallout 3 to a lesser degree). It's more like a Borderlands game. The story and characters are flat, but the game is still a lot of fun, I really liked it, especially modding it.

Fallout NV had the best story. I have to go back and finish up the side stories I finished the main story thought it was a lot better and more complex than Fallout 3 main story. I also loved the actual NV city.

As the meme-spamming kidiots of the day would say, New Vegas is the HOLD MY BEER version of Fallout 3. In spite of everything Bethesda did to hamstring the game, even in its woefully unfinished state, New Vegas is the clearly superior game even before mods.

NV is BY FAR better, let me list the ways:
1)better, more comprehensive mods (Project Nevada, Willow, etc)
2)more interesting NPCs and story
3)More systems and side quests
4)improved game engine
5)better perks
6)great companions
7)DLC is like a separate game.

I loved 3, and all Fallout games. They are all great. But Fallout NV excels on every front.

I say Fallout 3 is better than New Vegas. Why?
F3: + Better world; +Fun DLCs (Point Lookout especially); +More condenss expirence; +Random
speech checks (You have 30 points there's 30%[or sth] chance you'll pass)
- Wierd glitches; - Mothership Zeta; -Little amount of sidequests
FNV: +More developed RPG elements; +Even more fun DLCs; +Fractions
- Boring world; -Some irritating quests; - After +/- 50h performance commit suicide (at
least X360 version); -Static speech checks (45/48 You fail; 48/48 You passed)
