Best non-PC MAME (and semi-modern console) emulation option?

Postby Xylob » Sat Jan 20, 2018 2:25 pm

Hey all,
I love me some crazy-hard shmups (see avatar), but most of the best arcade shooters never made it to console without being seriously compromised.

I had MAME running on the ol' HTPC, but it died a couple years ago and I'm really needing to scratch that smhup itch now.

I know the original X-Box is apparently a bad-ass piece of equipment for modding to run emulators, but I gave mine away several years ago.
So that's not a very realistic option for me right now.

I'm also very interested in Atari Jaguar and NeoGeo emulation.
But not on PC.

I hate sitting at my desk to play games. On a (relatively) tiny monitor, with the wrong controllers, and blah little speakers, in a chair that's no better than what I spend all day in at work....
Video games (ESPECIALLY console games!) are to be enjoyed kicked back on the couch or recliner, in front of a giant TV, in the middle of a sweet sound system.

I've got:
PS2
GameCube
Wii
PSP
and component video cables for all of them, plus a DSLite (but I'd really like to be able to use my big-ass CRT).
What is the best option from those for MAME emulation? Performance and accuracy for gameplay are key - I really don't give a shit about audio, because I usually play my own music when I play games.

I also have a Vita, PS3, PS4, Wii-U, and 360.... but I really don't want to mod any of those just yet as I still use the official online services and don't want to get the boot.

Please, no fanboy rants. If you think a particular system or emulator is superior, I'd really like your honest input about why it excels. Actual factual real-life stories from actual users instead of just the "specs & features" I've read about on some sites.
and oh yeah - ideas for decent Jag & NeoGeo emu would be cool too. Particularly since my lame-ass cousin won't sell me the Jaguar he's got that's been collecting dust for over a decade...

TIA!

viewtopic.php?f=20&t=70861&hilit=psp+vice

A List of emulators I use on my PSP's (1000-3000) with 6.61 PRO CFW

Neo-Geo ain't bad on PSP2000/3000
Jag emulation is.... well... is there a working emulator that actually plays the release list? For any system?

PSP2000+ you can plug a lead into it and plug other end into TV.... Lead is usually less than a tenner...

A Hacked VITA should be, as far as I know, backwards compatible with PSP Emulators. Also should handle them ALOT better. Especially for bigger games. I will be buying one at some point for this purpose..

I've got the component video cable for the PSP, and it's awesome, so I'll look into the emus for it a bit more.
$ony "support" for the Vita seems to have dwindled to nothing lately, but I really haven't looked into modding that one yet. I know the memory cards for it cost a left nut and your dominant hand though.

I had a pretty good Jag emulator on my PC back in the day... PJ64? something like that. but since I dont' have a PC connected to the TV anymore, screw PC.

I feel like I say this far too often but I find the Raspberry Pi 3 running RetroPie to be the best emulator system on the market today. It may not be perfect for more complicated systems but works awesome for many and it so easy to setup and use. Plus it is super small in size. The setup/config is pretty straight forward and it just works. I couldn’t find a comparible system that oftens such ease of use for the price. This is why I feel emulation on consoles and such is no longer really even worth going after. XBox One emulation of the NES is cool for the sake of being able to do it but I can already play NES on my Pi and I draws way less power and is much easier for me to fit in my pocket and take places.

Me too. That's why my PC is also hooked up to my 60" TV and I'm playing all my games sitting on my sofa.

Oh, yes, your answer:
PS3 & Vita

One of my buddies got a RaspberryPi for xmas and has been loading it up with emulators, but he's disappointed with the performance in most cases.
Plus, I'm looking to leverage the hardware I've already got instead of dropping more $$$ on a 'maybe'.

My advice.. spend @10$ on a 5m vga cable and a 5m USB extention cable and hook your pc with your CRT TV, grab a MAME emu and if you don't want to use your keyboard and you have no gamepad on your pc you can buy a PS2toPC adapter for another 5$ or less. PC is the best option for emulating imho because it can emulate almost everything ;)

PC is upstairs, TV is in the basement, HDMI doesn't do well over long runs, USB definitley doesn't...
Wife is clumsy as hell and trips over nothing - two cords running through the house would be no bueno.

Consider buying a cheap laptop, you're guaranteed the best emulation. It can also be treated like a console and placed in a TV cabinet shelf. Also if you are concerned about the "right" controller, then you need an arcade stick like the ones made by Hori.

Just my 2 cents. Good luck :)

Funny thing is you want to use those old systems to run emulators on them, while most people these days emulate those old systems themselves :)

I understand you just want to use what you already have. For that PC you have maybe wireless streaming would have been an option using Steam link or something, but that might introduce some input delay, which might be a problem for older games. I have not used it personally, just wanted to mention it here, maybe someone has experience with it.

A 64bit, 2.5-2.9GHz intel dual core with 4Gig of memory is good enough for 80% of working games in MAMEUIFX/ARCADE..

This is what I have lol (2.86GHz)
Faster Processor and more ram is a good idea though :)
