Nintendo DS games ?

Postby rodion » Sun Jan 21, 2018 7:48 am

Recently I played Prince of Persia from 2008 on my PC. The game ended with a cliffhanger, then I found out they released an "Ending DLC" only on PS3 and Xbox360, so I watched it on Youtube, again a cliffhanger. Then I found out they made a sequel The Fallen King, but for Nintendo DS, so I ended up downloading DeSmuME and playing that game. I liked that game more than the main game. I was surprised how big that games was, I was expecting a 2-3 hour game and to finish it in two afternoons, but it took me 6 days ! Still no good ending and the series is long dead :/

That is the first time I played a Nintendo DS game. I was wondering what interesting games are there on the system ? But I'm NOT interested in the TOP 10 NINTENDO DS games, there are plenty of those lists on the web (which are usually just Pokemon, Mario games and various jRPGS that I am not interested in), I'm talking about some less know games/gems. I don't plan to play anything right now, just want to download some stuff and fool around with the emulator and check out what is this system capable of.

So far I found these interesting for various reasons(I only played a couple of minutes of each):
- Metroid Prime Hunter - this is the most visually impressive game I found so far, looks like a FPS PC game from 1999-2000, when you play it in higher resolution.
- Dementium 1 and 2 - this is supposed to be something like a first person Silent Hill game, and is fully 3D. I love Silent Hill, so this looks interesting.
- Moon - don't know much about this one, but it is from same devs as Dementium, so it could be interesting. It is a FPS set on Moon.
- GTA Chinatown Wars - it is like the first top down GTA games. Never played any GTA game before, but the story intro of this one got me intrigued, and is fascinating to see a whole 3D town with no loading on this small device.
- C.O.P. The Recruit - basically GTA 3 on DS, again impressed with rendering of a whole town, but this time in third person perspective.
- Okami Den - it has an unique art style and looks quite nice even on higher resolutions.
- Aliens: Infestation - don't know much about this one, but some guy said it was an Aliens metroidvania, and I love Aliens, and I love metroidvania...

Your turn now...

If you like metroidvania games, play monster tale and Daniel x. They are pretty good.

Yes, Dementium, Moon & C.O.P. are some of the best "unknown" titles.
My very favorite though is Neves, it's even in my Top-3 of Nintendo DS games - but you should play that with a stylus on real hardware (or pen/finger when emulating on an Android device using an DS emulator) I think it would lose a lot of it's charisma when using a PC-mouse.

Here is a list of my favorite Nintendo DS games:
- Mario Kart DS
- The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
- The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
- New Super Mario Bros
- Final Fantasy 3
- Final Fantasy 4
- Suikoden Tierkreis
- Chrono Trigger DS
- Dragon Quest 9
- Neves
- Contra 4
- Metal Slug 7
- Nintendo Touch Golf: Birdie Challenge
- Metroid Prime Pinball
- Resident Evil: Deadly Silence
- Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
- Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
- Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia
- Yoshi's Island DS
- Kirby Super Star Ultra
- Kirby: Mass Attack
- Monster Tale
- Tales of Innocence
- Golden Sun: Dark Dawn
- Mario vs Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis
- Dementium: The Ward

The Advanced Wars game(s) are fun turn based strategy games. They are not terribly difficult but can be frustrating since 1 wrong move could be the difference between success and failure.

Thanks for all the replies, I will check them out.

Also I want to ask is there any noticeable difference between USA and Europe versions of ROMs ? For PlayStation 2 USA version runs at 60 FPS, while European run at 50 FPS. Is there something like that going on on DS ?

Man, am I stupid, forgot that was because of TVs

Also found some other interesting game "Fighting Fantasy - The Warlock of Firetop Mountain". Don't know if it is any good, but graphics look fantastic, very high resolution textures on 3D environments compared to most games I saw.

Differences in region releases :

Usually it's not anything too noticeable, usually, language. Main game stays the same.
Jap usually release v1.00 v1.01 games
Revisions in different countries usually start with the last "Fixed" version ie 1.01 as v1.00

It's messy and depending on country of origin depends on what happens....

PSX/PS2 are swines for this...
