PC Gaming Wiki ?

Postby rodion » Sun Feb 18, 2018 7:52 pm

PC Gaming Wiki is a site were people write fixes for PC games, post links to latest patches, widescreen fixes, various improvements, etc... I found about the site around two years ago and since then, when ever I am about to play a PC game I first go there to check out if people have reported some issues with it on newer systems. There I learned about many useful tools one can use to make some older games run better like nGlide, dgVoodoo, Flawless Widescreen...

Here is an example page for Splinter Cell:
https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Tom_Clancy%27s_Splinter_Cell

Everybody can edit the pages and I also started contributing a bit from time to time. Since this is a retro site I thought this Wiki would be useful to people who have trouble running older games.

Also I am curious if people ever heard about it and do they use it ?

I found that site 3 or 4 years ago when I was playing Fallout 3 on PC (Win7) and needed a fix to stop it from crashing all the time. Haven't used it very much since then. I usually just visit it once or twice a year.

EDIT:
some other interesting and useful PC sites:

Never heard of it but will make a note of it. Not often I run into problems but good to know there's a place like that around.

Probably my number one spot when I have PC game troubles. Sometimes I regret not going there before I download or buy something, because some games will simply not work on modern systems.

The criticism I have with PCGW is that only the most popular games will have information, which made me consider contributing to the PCGW, well, at least when I have found a solution after banging my head against the keyboard for an hour.

Yeah, I know what you mean, but there are so many less know games that:
a) sold very poorly
b) people simply forgot about them and don't play them after all these years
c) are extremely hard to find, even on sites like IsoZone, and can't even be tested.
Then it's up to us to first make them available, then try to get them work and spread the word about possible fixes as much as we can.

Just like TheIsoZone is as good as it's community, same goes for PC Gaming Wiki. People themselves need to put the effort, and also attract new members or it will die.

Obligatory site for all kinds of hellish PC gaming issues, highly useful. I use it all the time.

Some fix entries are not entirely clear by themselves sometimes, but they always give you the right hints how to investigate further.

Essential for all kinds of widescreen patches and graphical modding, too. Sometimes they provide information not even found on WSGF.
