First vgames with checkpoints ?

Postby kremiso » Sat Jun 16, 2018 11:34 am

Don't know if i put this in the right forum, if not sorry

As title say i'm searching for the oldest games with this feature

i mean checkpoints like we know it in today products (i.e. platforms)
and NOT in screen-level form (the level reached is the last checkpoint)
the oldest that i know is Pitfall II (and maybe the oldest too ?),
also to be clear to what i'm searching for (games with scrolling)

can't remember any others atm, my memory suck
help :)

Hmm, side scrollers with checkpoints, you say? The earliest examples I can think of are cinematic platformers like Prince of Persia, Another World and Flashback. These all have checkpoints if I'm not mistaking.

Super Mario Bros. 1 (1985) was my first thought because I don't remember if Pac-Land (1984) had checkpoints.

Any shmup starting from Space invaders. But I think you meant a platformer though shmups are sidescrolling

Mighty BombJack(C-64) - Super Jumping platformer ,

Creatures 1 and 2 (C-64) - you probably know thise C-64 mega hits ,
Total Recal (C-64) - action platformer .

thanks for the replies, seems not too many games indeed
i have found this list online, but it contains all genres and all types of checkpoints
(also password and save type like megaman and metroid)
but it's a start point also that :

I must re-check Prince of Persia, if i remember well when you die game restart at the begin
of last level reached
Another World has an hybrid type of CP, code-system + real CP
Flashback has an hybrid too : code+save+real CP

Ah , me ,my bro and my cousin used to play this game all the time , it has so many levels ,passages ,secrets and it is extrimly fun . Similar to Super Mario Bros , you have 2 players playing alternativly game mode (once player one loose one life, player two plays where he left off), and ,since enemies in this game starts spawning if you remain stationary , there was particulary problematic place for them to pass , very narrow passage thats fill full of enemies if you dont pass it fast , where they both died constantly, so i named that place "Dragan's and Daniel's dead-end passage" !

On a side note , i also played adventure/super adventure islands games , they are very good .
