Is a alianware steam machen good for high end emaulation?

Postby deltax5 » Sun Jul 22, 2018 2:00 am

They look upgradable and will fit the shelf well. im thinking putting a 4770 in there if i can find a a cheep one on ebay or something. which is 3.4gh
it says it has nvidea graphics but from the youtube video's it looks like it's on the board. I remember i had some problems running dolphin with intel graphics but that was with a board that had a socket from a year before. Iv seen some that had real gpu's but can't find those anymore. Will it be enough for 4k? Im not using this thing for real games just emulators.
WIth some upgrades will it be enough for higan, High end arcade games, everything mame and fireburn alpha. You know the good stuff. I am just going to buy LaunchBox and set everything very nice.
Im doing all this cause im tired of this raspberry pi retro pi thing i made.

I have one of these. I love it. I have seen videos of this doing emulation via Hyperspin, but I never got around to trying it out, but I know it should do Dreamcast, Wii, and Gamecube. I use it as a Steam player, and it works well. The only thing upgradeable is the hard drive (an SSD is a good upgrade), CPU (I upgraded my CPU to an i5, and it makes a difference), and RAM (I have 8GB in mine).. Graphics is on board and not upgradeable.

Is there anything else that size thou and won't hert the bank. it's kinda old now but i was thinking it should be enough for even 4k and the price is low cause it's old. Some other mini pc's have there cpu's and other components soldered on so im pretty much screwed for my needs for those.
But is that built in gpu good enough. I was thinking it should be loads better then regular integrated since it's nvidea design. Ill install fresh windows on it and make launchbox boot up when windows logs in.
I can get the steam machine for 400 and for 200 dollars i can put a i7 in there which emulators like higan need right all on ebay. If i can run up to that mario kart gp arcade game ill be happy.

The description of that PC says it doesn't come with DDR (RAM) or SSD (HDD), so unless you have those already, this PC seems cost prohibitive.

Ya I just saw that kinda scummy.
Another option is just build a pc from scratch. But i kinda want small factor like a console. The smallest case i found is like a size of a receiver basically. mini board and mini gpu with a small power supply is all is needed to keep the size of the case down. i just don't know what case. I I just buy the parts on sale for the rest of the year i can prob keep the price lower then 1k. The thing is i need to make a full fledge pc in a couple of years which will cost me prob $2500. I also gotta buy a new used cheep car in a year. All this is getting to me.
I understand some mame games will require even higher specs. i dought ill ever want to play those.
Im still eyeing on that steam machine thou. it's a shame they don't make them anymore. It just the gpu. is it a better gpu, im guessing is't more like a 660gtx or something. i got a 3770 and i tried running dolphin with integrated graphics and it had some problems, but after putting the 680 it ran fine. That was many years ago thou. will it even fit a i7 or have enough juice?
Here is what i want to put on it. Mame games, whatever it handles i guess, im guessing it will handle the games that the pi struggle with ease, FBA is basically mame(i kinda like it better then mame seems to have less button delay with the right settings), Higan (cpu hungry, main case of needing more gpu) the rest i dought ill ever even have to worry. All in 4k, maybe sacrifice some mame games in 1080p. Also want to try that new mario GP emulator. if i can get it running.

Found this when looking up what the gpu is actually
Alienware:
Unfortunately, the current model is soldered to the board. The card uses the same chipset as the 860m, but has been modified.

It benchmarks at roughly the same marks as a GTX 750 TI.

The alianware alpha R2 has a 960 in it. That should be enough, i am thinking.
But the cpu's seem to be a T model. Does that mean i need to get another T model cpu or can any cpu fit in, within it's series of course.. Also will I have problems putting a more powerfull cpu?

from the youtube video's i saw they just put any cpu for the same socket. Which is nice. One video the guy said the cpu he is using will loose some performance. <y guess cause it doesn't draw enough power. How much of a loss will i loose if I put a 4ghz processor.

if it were me i would just build an ITX or MINI ITX pc that way its still small in size but to an extend you can put what you want in it in terms of cpu and gpu
