Rediscovering the PS2

Postby The_Docmeister » Thu Nov 16, 2017 8:14 pm

Hello from Glasgow, Scotland

My kids lost their PS4s when we were burgled a couple of weeks ago, so we dug out an old PS2 and started retro gaming!
Local charity shops were selling 10 games for £4.90, so we started loading up. Then we discovered FMCB and finally this forum!
So now we have a phat with fitted 500GB HD and picked up a slim at a car boot sale last weekend. The slim will hopefully go into our VW Camper.

Looking forward to seeing what can be done on these old platforms now - got an unused Wii kicking about somewhere too...

Thanks Biggsy, I guess these things happen - would help if my wife locked doors or shut windows!
At least I'm spending some time with the kids and introducing them to the idea of modding stuff.

Your in the right place to learn :)

The best method of using a PS2 hacked is to buy a "Phat PS2" and a "Network Adapter", this allows you to use an internal IDE HDD upto 750gig.
You can then install games using PC software to the HDD and play them like you inserted the disks
FreeMCBoot comes with OPL usually, this is used as a front end listing the installed games and click to play !

Compatibility is also higher with Phats + Network Adapter. It's a little money to be spent, but it's worth it. From this point you can then convert the Network Adapter to SATA (1-3) using a PCB Bridge that fits inside the network adapter, giving you access to up to 2 Terrabytes of space by using a SATA HDD !

Also, dig out that WII, it can be hacked too !!!

PS2 (Phat) + Network Adapter + SATA Bridge + 2TB HDD = Insanity+1 !

Welcome to TIZ, also gonna second that comment about the Wii,
a soft-modded Wii is a heck of an emulation machine, PS1 is even borderline playable now.

What up, Doc!

I'm sort of rediscovering the PS2 currently, as well. Such a vast library, so many good ones. I dare ya to go through all 183 pages of files here one by one. Welcome!

In a day where criminals have no fear of breaking into an occupied home, leaving doors and windows unlocked is reckless endangerment. Of course, if anybody breaks into my house, the county coroner will have to remove them with a mop and bucket.

Welcome to Tiz, sorry to hear about the burglary, I'd certainly soft-mod that Wii and put that in the camper as they are 12 volt, or the PS2.

No throwing that Wii-Mote through the windscreen though.

Thanks for all the replies!

Camper idea was to use the PS Slim with hardwired in-car adapter, a mini projector and pull down white faced IKEA blackout blind between the front seats. Side & rear windows already have blackouts, so kids could happily play as we drive.
However, now you've all been suggesting modding the Wii I think it may work better as a media centre in the van, especially if I can sort out mobile internet access!

This was a dangerous forum to sign up to...

Hi there, Nice to meet ya! Yeah, the PS2 rocked! I have memories playing Ratchet and Clank, Simpsons: Hit and Run, Crazy Taxi and Sonic Mega Collection Plus to name just a few.
In 2012, I sadly sold our old PS2 fat in a yard sale, that we got in December 2003. The thing was collecting dust and started not reading discs very well though.
But the next year I started collecting old games and found a silver PS2 slim for just $5 in a Salvation Army, and I've had no issues with running DVDs or games in it. By far my best thrift store purchase to date! I currently have the two Megaman collection discs, Snoopy vs. the Red Baron and Time Crisis II (with the light gun). Good stuff. :)
