You can load homebrew software just fine with Dreamshell. From what I understand, every games compiled with the Katana SDK or WinCE requires some special boot instructions contained in the bioses from Sega.
In that sense, every homebrew/indie game developed with the KallistiOS SDK (or other?) should run just fine on the Dreamshell bios.
I was told by swat on his forums (dc-swat.ru) that he was already looking into it for the next update of DreamShell. He's probably going to extract some code from one of the bioses created by Sega and jam it in his stuff, or the other way around. I'm no expert in this matter but that's what I deduced from my research.
Anyway, there are SO many great homebrew games you can play right now: Beats of Rage mods, ReviveDC releases, other emulators and lots and lots of other. Personnally, I think that even without the ability to boot Retail games from SD card, it is still an amazing feature that every Dreamcast should have!
