ScummVM games on Dreamcast

Postby kremiso » Mon Jan 01, 2018 10:19 pm

ScummVM on Dreamcast, joy and pain
pain for a couple of 'bastard' (to make run) games among which:

Broken Sword 1&2
Discworld 1&2
Full Throttle
The Dig
Curse of Monkey Island

Discworld 1, Full Throttle and The Dig are already on TIZ (from other users)
and think are completable all three (let me know if not)

The Scumm official page say that only Curse of Monkey Island and The Dig are not
supported in DC port, but i think it's not updated anymore, cause lacks of
other non working games (and curious thing The Dig indeed works !)

In this period i have put my dirty hands upon this thorny games trying to make them
run on DC and possibly completable

About Broken Sword 1, i uploaded a couple of days ago a first complete release
of the full game, and i'm testing it to see if it's completable or there are bugs

---
Curse of Monkey Island - of this game i have uploaded a couple of months ago
a test version with videos and speech disabled; i'll return to this project
in the next days (with Demul i can save the game so can try how far i can go in it)

---
Discworld 2 - this one has been a real pain in the arse in this last month to make
it run at first, and in decent way at second
what i have found about this game :

run extremely bad, with LOT of crashes only with the 1.2.1 version of ScummDC,
but i manage in this days to make it run also on the 1.1.1 version
this last one reduce drastically the crashes (near zero), but have a bug that not permits
to access to a specific location of the game (the garden) so the game is not completable.

BUT, the save game of the 1.1.1 version work also with the 1.2.1, so i thought about
a 2 disk version to make it play it entirely, finally !
the first disk with the 1.1.1 version and quite all the game, the second disk with only
the buggy level and 1.2.1 version ; tested in these hours : WORKS !

but also this need to be played entirely to test it

SO, what's this topic ?
all and nothing, chronicle of a couple of months of passion
please use this forum to make request about Scumm Dreamcast, give help, or report
fault or bugs :lovetiz:

Thank you for all the hard work you're putting into this. I will surely try some of these games in the near future.
I'm not trying to put extra workload on you but Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis or Flight of the Amazon Queen would also be great additions to this project. :D

Yes, thanks, step by step
i deliberately wanted to start from the thougher ones to make a little light
also in this sector
If i reach with this first ones, my next step are the FM-Towns versions of Scumm games,
and Fate of Atlantis it's one of those ;)

I have completed my test upon Broken Sword 1 .cdi version

http://www.theisozone.com/downloads/dre ... 1-scummvm/

on Demul, it's completable 100%

i have noticed that music plays a little buggy during the game (only the music, sound effects
and speech works fine), i want try to fix it; if you find it annoying, decrease music volume
or turn it off completely (music, sound effects and speech have different settings on this game)

i had two (memory? probably) crashes during my walkthrough, avoidable reloading a 'closer'
gamesave, so the obvious hint is to save often (3/4 blocks on VMU are not much)

the rest was all fun :)

Bad (on average) news about Discworld 2

- using the 1.1.1 scumm the game is more stable, but crash every 3/4 screens :(

- using Demul it's impossible to go over Act 2 (this need to be tested on real hardware)

- the game can be saved

so, sadly, for now i reach a dead-end point
IMO the only way to unstuck is to reach to compress in .mp3 all the .MUS files of the game,
to use less DC ram
i have tried myself with no luck until now...
in scumm forums there are a couple of pages about .MUS files :

if there's anyone around capable to do this... one step forward please :)
here an example of .MUS file (it's the title tune) :
Spoiler:
http://frd.li/a6f92063b796c36b1c6721d6fee27efe

At last, if you want try my latest (hope for now) version of the game, it's here :
Spoiler:
http://frd.li/58ea5238065f4e1e46956edf58c3d34b

it is a selfboot image (.cdi), compressed in .ARC, the real dimension is 465Mb
if you like it, maybe i can post this (plus the patch disk) in the DC homebrew download page

let me know

Randomly founds of this period :

Discworld 2 - i have prepared a patch disc, needed only to access to the 'garden' location,
bugged in my 1.1.1 release, for those few sick guys that are playing it :)

Indiana Jones 4 (fate of Atlantis) FM-TOWNS version - i did a couple of tries with this one;
the best releases of Scumm to make run it are imo 0.6.0 and 0.7.0
(both extremely old), i need to test it to see if can be completed.
ALSO I DONT KNOW IF THESE OLD INDY GAMES CAN BE POSTED ON TIZ
(i'm thinking also at 'the last crusade') ,i'll ask to moderators this...

Riven - with the last release of Scumm (2.0.0) i reach to make run it (with Demul)
it works fine, BUT the gamesave can't be reloaded yet (41 blocks on VMU);
already sent a bug ticket to developers, hope they reach to fix it

Hey,

This is really awesome. I hope your able to get Discworld 2 to run on the Dreamcast. I'm a huge fan of the series and would love to play this on the Dreamcast.

I REALLY want to play Discworld Noir, I have a chipped PSX, was able to get the game to run in 60hz without the screen shaking and in full color, but the screen is shifted to far down to be able to see the entire screen which really sucks. Haven't found a way around that

about your issue, have you tried another tv ?
because i remember my old crt, when displayed 50Hz signal the image was centered,
when instead 60Hz shifted, if i have understood well your issue...

Also WELCOME to TIZ, maybe you can make an intro post here ;)

Hey,

I'll clarify what my issue is.

So I live in America, so my tv's are all NTSC of course.

When I burned Discworld Noir and X-Com Terror From The Deep and just popped them in my modded Playstation, the image was centered, but shaking like crazy. So it was completely unplayable. Plus Discworld Noir was also black and white.

I found a boot disc that is supposed to boot PAL games in 60hz. I used that, then insert the 2 games, and while Discworld Noir will now play in color, and the screen won't shake on either, the entire screen is shifted down so about half the of screen isn't visible. I do have another TV I can try it on though, I might give that a shot today and see.

The instructions I read for the boot disc claims that if you hold L1, L2, R1, R2 together and use the d-pad that you can re position the image, but when I tried that it doesn't do anything.

Real bummer because I would really love to play these 2 games, as well as OverBlood 2.

I'm assuming worst case scenario I can just use an emulator, but I'd love to play them on real hardware if possible.

I have test my release of Broken Sword on real DC
completely different running compared to the Demul one :|
the music play fine, instead the speech sometimes play little buggy
(on Demul is the opposite  )

all ok for all the rest 8-)

Welcome to TIZ, zamakli
I don't have tried yet Myst on Dreamcast, but reading in ScummVM forums
i see that should be playable using the latest releases...
if i take a little time (and reach to improve my current shitty web speed)
maybe i'll test also that

Ok, done a quick test upon Myst and 2.0 scummDC release
the game crash on start because DC can't manage .mov (quicktime) videos
so also this need to be manually modified to try to make it run

there are a couple of videos on youtube about Myst DC,
but now i'm thinking are probably fake, or maybe they use different version
of the game than the PC one, i must check into this more...
