Did old sony tube tv killed my dreamcast?

Postby shwoaps » Sun May 27, 2018 8:03 am

Connected yesterday in evening my Dreamcast to old SONY trinitron KV-2167MT with composite cable(not original). Console booted, battery is dead, so i had to set date again. Then chose to boot Dreamshell cd. When booting cd, Tv flickered and tv/audio signal disappeared, gdrom stopped spinning.

Switched off console, turned on. No change, no signal, gdrom does not spin. Only cooler is spinning, and power light is on.

Tested Tv with ps2. Tv works.

---- in depth info ----
I played night before with Dreamcast and everything was working. There were small/short tv flickering. But it stopped fast and i played with no problems.

I Got this tv 5 days ago from thrown electronics place. it was held in container. Then i played with fat ps2 on it. First night everything was perfect. Second night there was small/short flickering. third night there were more flickering. There where some serious flickering, all picture was "dancing" for a short of time.

Because both ps2 and tv where newly acquired, i decided to test with Dreamcast that worked with no problems for years through vga. So now it does not work anymore.

Dreamcast is vga, hdd moded.
2.5 ide hdd is powered from dreamcast psu, when i was booting Dreamshell, hdd should have started to spin, and i'm guessing that at this point console died.

----
The big question is - could tube tv kill console through composite cable? Now I'm afraid to connect anything to this tv. It has 120w power, so that's a lot. I have no grounding.

My opinion is that your t.v. is shot or needs repair.

Then i tested DC on my vga monitor that i played for years on. Nothing. Problem is that gdrom does not spin, and no booting sound is coming.

As i said, is it even possible for tv to kill console through composite and audio cables !?

Ok, it is possible for tv to kill console through audio/video cables. Knowledgeable electronic told me.

My hope is that psu died, not audio/video output.

You may want to look at where the power supply inside the DC connects to the board, they use pressure connections to keep the power in place and sometimes they get loose and arch/spark.

Its possible the PSU may have loose prongs.

This never happened to me at all, and kind of odd that faulty TV would have somehow damaged/messed up a console. Not saying it isn't possible, but never heard of this happening at the same time before though.

It's very rare that a CRT T.V. will damage a system connected to it.
Some times the guns on an older T.V. will get dirty over time and short out and cause a high voltage backfire ark to ground, this may cause damage to anything connected to it.
This is very rare, but it does happen. :(

And that's what happened. Tested with good working psu, have spare DC for things like this, same thing, no audio/video, just cooler spinning and power light is on.

1. Is it possible to repair this DC? That is, in reasonable amount off effort. Maybe some protection fuse, some known components to check?

2. Can i fix this tv? Any info would really help.
This is really nice tv with good sound, good image, really easy on the eyes. And the best thing, that it does not give that awful high pitch sound, after which the next whole day my head is squeaking.
