You could say PS2 came close... many of the PS2 games still hold up really well today.

Silent Hill 3, Black, Valkyrie Profile 2 all looked amazing... Zone of the Enders' particle effects were top-notch, I don't know if Halo or whatever was even at that level.

<EDIT> This is PS2

PS2 game close, but I still remember being blown away by playing the xbox with some high quality component cables on an HDTV for the first time.

That is the HD release of SH collection.
Black is on OG XBOX.. it's a straight 1:1 port too, not pushing the XBOX, but pushing the PS2.
ZOE is ok, it has good effects, that's about all it has.

PS2 is heavily limited to it's 480i standard and work arounds to get a stable image which included field rendering as one method, though later it improved, it still pales to the more capable Nvidia chip in the XBOX known as NV2A (GeForce 3/4 variant)

I have both consoles, PS2 is no where close, not even God of War or GT4 can come close to the top looking games on XBOX, Gamecube can in some games.

That PS2 Hardcore looks no better than the DC version but that is no denigration, they both are exceptionally good for their age.

However DOA2 Ultimate on the Xbox in 480p is as good as the PQ on Xbox gets and this means, in that respect, its should be considered a benchmark for its console generation IMHO.

Gamers nowdays are obsessed with "Pretty Shiney Things".... GFX DON'T MAKE A GAME. They make GFX !

The Game itself is a totally different thing and it's mechanics tells you how good the game is. GFX Mean shit.... Half a game but hey it looks really good... If that's the case, watch a film....

Peops - DOOM and QUAKE were fekking amazing graphics when they were released... Nowdays people laugh....

GFX don't make a good game no matter how shiney (Including all the Fixes/Updates/DLC's yadda yadda)

Dragons Lair - Ultimate gfx - All hand drawn frames.. No CGI/GFX... Don't mean it's a good game...

I'd rather a game looks a little poor on GFX and have a huge game rather than a Pretty game thats over within 12 hours...and cost me 60 quid for the privilege....

You know the games...

Agree fully, but given the choice you are not going to own a game on an inferior platform with it looking worse are you?
I will give points for controller preference however, that is a big thing! 8-) :lovetiz:

No one is going to argue with that. I still go back and play old SNES and PS1 RPGs year after year because the games are just that good.

I have all three and GameCube was always my favorite - because, as said before, it's all about the games.

I had all 3 as well and it was really about what games you liked to play. Depending on what I was in the mood for I would go to different consoles.

FPS = Xbox
JRPG = PS2
Party/CoOp = Gamecube

The closest PS2 came was probably Gran Turismo 4 with its 1080i output. Otherwise, the Xbox trounced it.

F-Zero GX on the gamecube looks the dog's bollocks even today, 480p, proper widescreen, 60 fps with no slowdown, awesome eye candy.
Tough challenge though, the game will nail you to the cross, it's ridiculously hard.

As a huge Godzilla fan I bought the Gamecube for the sole reason of getting Destroy All Monsters Melee at the release date. It wasn't released for the Xbox until like a year later, and then I bought that version as well. Graphics were basically identical but the Xbox definitely had the faster loading, which was nice. For a non-Mario/Zelda fanboy, the GC just didn't have the library of titles compared to Xbox & PS2, not even close. However, Wrestlemania 18 & 19 were excellent on the Gamecube.

@Cat - F-Zero GX sounds like fun for a change, forgot all about that game. (On my loaded Wii/CRT of course.)Thanks!

Not possible to compare the xbox with the ps2 since the ps2 was an earlier console.Games on the PS2 improved as devolpers got to grips with the hardware.An example would be burnout 1 compared to B2.Same with the xbox,games got better looking even on std rca leads like the ps

Original Xbox was pretty fantastic. I owned a PS2 years back and it was never quite as good. I gotta say the Dreamcast was almost on par with Xbox visuals though. But for me, PC still beats console in performance and visuals every time. :D
