Xbox Live Arcade game rips for OG Xbox?

Postby XC-3730C » Mon Jun 18, 2018 6:57 am

According to wikipedia, there were 27 titles for Xbox Live Arcade on the OG Xbox. I have only been able to find Alien Sky, AstroPop, Bejeweled, and Bookworm.

Does anyone know if there exists rips of the other 23 titles?

I suppose what I should have asked for was each XBLA game as a separate executable. I prefer to launch each game through the dashboard, rather than the XBLA interface, like the photo I have included here (the icons and backgrounds are custom).

I'm not sure how it is done but the XL Arcade content as provided must be installed or used from disc and launched using the provided GUI.

However I've just looked at the extracted content and it seems it was intended to be installed in TDATA ie. if it had been downloaded originally.

The fact is it works from disc or installed as an app. That means it should be possible to extract each game, install and launch them as separately. They each have their own folders and default.xbe so it seems it probably is possible. Custom folder art could be added in the same way as any other installed game.

The precise method and whether there are any problems doing this I do not know as I have not done it myself.

Thank you for the info. I will extract the ISO tonight, and see if I can install each game folder, and add artwork accordingly, as seen in my photo. I have always been more of a fan of individual games in a collection, vs an all-in-one solution. This is why I don't care for CoinOps vs individual emulators.

I am also wonder if when installing each XBLA game via the disc method, if all of the games utilize the same save file.

So I installed the XBLA games using the guide (extracted the ISO, transferred that to F:\Games, and installed all games and keys via a burned DVD), but the result is that the XBLA game doesn't through my dashboard (XBMC), so I launched it via File Manager, and all of the games are greyed out.

Any ideas how to fix this?

I got it working, but I guess I will have to settle with the built in loader, rather than each game individually.I am still trying to figure out how to load each XBLA game without the loader...

Re: Xbox Live Arcade game rips for OG Xbox?

Having no real luck with getting this to work. Inconsistent results too.

If you look at the disc contents either on disc or when installed (DVD2Xbox) you'll find a folder: "contents". That seems to be all the arcade games which are installed, when you use the main menu options/key, to E:\TDATA\4d5300c8\$C\specific game ID folder.

Also alongside that $C folder are the PNG icons for each game and some main menu and other icons. There is also a default.xbe which is the main Arcade Launcher.

Of the 53 folders in the $C folder the first 27 (4d5300c80000000a to 4d5300c800000019) are games with a default.xbe and you'd think you'd be able to extract those folders to E:\Games, reboot and play them from the main Games menu individually. But.........noooooo.

I've not tested them all but there are four or five distinct results which repeat if you do that:-

1). Many of the games simply crash the Xbox and it'll freeze on the a blank screen.

2). Others simply cause a reboot to the main dash.

3). A few launch correctly but the game itself has some unspecified problem and reports "Game settings are damaged and can't be used". This may mean just certain game menu items like "Return To Arcade Launcher" don't function for obvious reasons. Nevertheless the game does seem to play OK as far as I have tested them eg. Alien Sky.*

4). The game launches correctly but despite not flagging up the same settings problem warning it has a noticeable fault eg. Hamsterball Gold has no sound/music.

5). In only one case I've tested did the game appear to launch and play perfectly without any settings damaged warning: Dino & Aliens.

What the other 26 folders in $C are I'm not sure, maybe they're the actual keys required for the games, but whatever the case they have no default.xbe so if they are games there's no way to launch them directly from a dashboard.

So there appears to be the likelihood that only a very few of the games on the arcade disc can be separately installed and used standalone. The rest must be launched by the arcade launcher.

Unless you modify the ISO contents if you launch Xbox Live Arcade from the disc you're always going to get the installer main menu first and have to select the actual Arcade game launcher from its menu. But with it installed from the disc you could put in a shortcut XBE in Apps to launch the Arcade menu direct from that default.xbe in "content".

But as far I have tested it appears most of the games must be launched with the Arcade launcher running and can not be installed as standalone games.

There are exceptions though like Alien Sky* and Dino & Aliens. I''ve just checked those other games shown in that XBMC4Gamers screenshot and, surprise, surprise they're all from the same studio work as standalone games too although, like Alien Sky*, that is despite the damaged settings warning message.

That is probably the only reason why you can find them available as standalone games.

*BTW something that maybe useful to mention is that if you try to launch Alien Sky in 480p on a v1.6 Xbox as a standalone it will not display correctly. As I've long been aware of this v1.6 problem as well as Rocky5's solution (480p v1.6 Launcher XBMC script) I recognised it immediately. As expected in 480i it displays correctly.

However, interestingly when booted from the Arcade Launcher it works in 480p perfectly. I don't know whether this is new info but that means the Arcade Launcher is another launcher tool that could be used to fix the v1.6 Xbox 480p game display problem.

Just realize the Xbox Live Arcade Launcher actually uses CDX which is one of the XBE loaders Rocky5 used for his 480p Xbox v1.6 Launcher. So that ^ is not new info.

They are like DLC so the contentmeta.xbx file must be hashed with the Xbox HDD key, Little more to it than that but thats basically it.

Will test some things out and get back to you lot.

Alright had a look, signing (hashing contextmeta.xbx) is easy but these damn games are hardcoded to TDATA\4d5300c8\ also the loader (xbox live menu) has hardcoded data on each game. So I cant rebuild the contextmeta.xbx file as it wont match up with what the loader xbe is looking for

So only way currently is to load them via the loader.

Also the keys are in 4d5300c80100000* folders so yeah.

Can’t even set shortcuts to point to the games xbe files as it refuses to load them, so not sure what the loader xbe is doing that’s letting it load the game.

I tried that too, in fact when I found most of those I tested would not launch when installed in "Games" it was my first thought to use shortcuts instead pointing to the default.xbe for each game in situ ie. where it is installed in TDATA.

I was expecting it to work and surprised it did not just as you've discovered too.

They do work, there's no problem, that was my point. You can install them yourself from the XL Arcade contents.

Unlike most of the other 27 games they can simply be copied to Games and, apart from that warning message I mentioned they appear to play perfectly. So there is nothing stopping you installing those games and adding custom/box artwork to their folders as shown in the screenshot.

I would suspect that if there are any others from the same studio: Pop Cap Games amongst the remaining titles they will work standalone too.

It actually adds to the mystery why they and Dino & Aliens work and most of the 22 others do not.
