Surreal64 Goldeneye Controller Configuration

Postby HisDivineShadow » Sun Jul 15, 2018 2:51 pm

Just thought I'd try this classic game, Goldeneye, from EarthwormJames'

http://www.theisozone.com/downloads/xbo ... mpilation/

Works fine with default settings but I can't set up the Xbox movement/look mapping to work in any way I'm happy with. I realise the original game was designed for the N64 controller with its single analogue stick but this is like going back to my earliest days on the PS where FPS control map seemed to vary greatly with every game.

I'm just finding all of the control type options for this game very awkward compared even to those old PS games.

I also tried Forsaken from this collection, the first FPS, I ever played on the PS and that is another case in point. The default N64 controls are horrible and I've not found a controller set up I can live with. The PS version, which I still have, used all the main Dualshock controller buttons and both analogue sticks, complex but not nearly as awkward as this.

Any mapping/settings suggestions to improve Surreal's N64 Goldeneye's controls?

You have to select the in-game button mapping you like (move & strafe on dpad, look on analog stick and fire on R or Z) and then map your 360-controller to map it to both analog sticks and one of the R-buttons to shoot.

The current config is meant to work with the Solitaire 1.2 in game option. This was explained in the included "1st Person Shooter Configs.txt". But RX did all this so I'm not going to be much help. I'm not into first person shooters so I left it all to him. Anyway, here's the contents of the txt file.

"The Xbox and N64 controllers are very different, and you really see it with the first person shooters. Luckily, userguydude configured the controls for them. Though some require in game configurations to match up. Here's a list of those games and their in game setting.

007 Goldeneye: Solitaire 1.2
007 The World is Not Enough: Undercover 4
Armorines: Alt 3
Doom: Turn in game brightness all the way up
Duke Nukem Zero Hour: Atomic
Hexen: control pad
Turok 2: Weapon Select: Norm, Change to Low Res for better speed
Turok Rage Wars: Weap Select: Tap (double tap A to change weapons)

If you don't like these configurations, you can always go into "Controller Configuration" and reset to default. Though I would warn it may take a while as it's pretty tricky.

All the individual controller settings are here...

Thanks for the info, I'll have to look into this some more.

I used Solitaire 1.2, which I think is the default set up, and I didn't get on with it. Not having a X/Y invert let alone invert Turn L/R always takes me an age to get used too anyway and ruins me when I go back to more conventional/modern FPS mapping.

Also F/B movement is mapped to the right stick and Look/Strafe/Aim to the left - almost the reverse of what is now the norm in the modern FPS for right-handed gamers.

No doubt I could eventually get used to it but it does make the game far less attractive now as an occasional 'goto' choice than the many other FPS of that era which I also didn't play at the time but have done for the first time in recent years and usually enjoyed.

I tried to get the configs right for the fighting games. Some others if it felt really off. But I think if you are really into a game you are ultimately going to have to tweak it yourself. And it can be quite the pain in the ass. I remember trying it when I first started messing with surreal. Took hours. Buttons are often hidden in the R stick. Such a mess. But I do feel the Xbox controller is doable for all N64 games, if time consuming.

Yep, understood. Thanks again and for the work you did putting that whole package together.

you could try copying the below text to your save DCBC50D1/DCBC50D1.INI
Controls will be weird in the post screen before you go into game, but once playing should be ok. Also make sure solitare 1.2, when level loaded bring up watch, left, left, change control style to 1.2 solitaire. The only changes I have made are to the ini is the controls, I have remapped the in game menu button to the back button as I kept bringing it up when it got intense. Just back your old ini up in case you dont get on with it!
