Postby aden34 » Mon Dec 17, 2012 1:22 am

i want to fill up my xbox with some HD movies and just about all the best ones are .mkv so i was wondering if there was something that can play .mkv files or does xbox already do that?

Yes, xbmc plays mkv, BUT only up to a about 480P, or something like that.... and the video cannot be over a certain quality level

Yes like bobdole, XBMC plays MKV and most others as well.

Also it may work best in 480p but If you play with the playback options in XBMC you can get it to work on 720p and a little higher.

Well that's what I have going on for my Xbox, for all my backups of my Anime that I have on DVD Data disc. ;)

Works fine here with last version. But if you try something higher than SD (480p/576p) the framerate will decrease.
For 50 bucks you can have a Raspberry Pi which can play 1080p without glitches or just a basic media center (Asus ones are pretty cool, i got a O!Play Air).

sounds to me like you just need to update xbmc. i had problems with .mkv and mp4 video with older versions, i have no problem at all with either now.

will depend on bitrate & codec used to encode the mkv as to whether it plays (media info lite will show this from within windows in context menu) without crashing or plays at all, there's a thread round this place somewhere posted last year on this very subject, however the media player you use on the xbox could be the issue switch to dvd player & see how it runs or mplayer, updating xbmc & expecting the player to work will only do so if the players themselves are updated to a higher version, updating xbmc doesn't guarantee this, system info will tell you what version of player you have, personally if neither players work your only option is to recode

MKV Video player for original xbox

Postby Brapsgagsof » Wed Feb 27, 2013 8:41 am

Is there an xbox application or method that allows using the dongle & remote for dvd-playing? Just wondering. The player using the controller is ok, but lookign to get some use out of my remote. Have an unlockable maxtor drive so cant run with chip off.

I've been trying to get some of my DVD movies on my Xbox for awhile. I've tried using DVD2Xbox, HandBrake, and a couple of software but haven't had much luck with them solo. DVD2Xbox would only give me the individual Fob files, which would play only some of the time. Handbrake would copy the movies but couldn't remove the encryption on the DVDs. I've had some luck with 123DVDcopy, then compressing the files with HB, and ftp to HDD afterward. I don't use the newest XBMC (Think its 3.0, just haven't gotten to updating that yet).
The settings are a bit picky for compressing the files on Handbrake, so tweaking the file and having to make multiple copies until you get one to work, it can be a little tricky but not hard.

Output settings I have are.

Container MKV
Video Codec MPEG 4
Frame rate 30
Peak frame rate checked
AVG Bitrate 3000
Quality Slider bar set to highest setting.

Honestly, for me, even at 480p MKVs played like absolute shit on XBMC4XBOX.

I will say that they may not look like the best quality video of 2018. I simply just like being able to add the movies to my Xbox, its still a cool add in my opinion.
