Digital video output for the OG Xbox

Postby NotSoSmart_Sideswipe » Sat Aug 12, 2017 5:39 am

I've been looking around about this everywhere and never got any solid documentation on the subject. If anyone here knows anything on somehow getting digital video output we can get REAL HDMI Mods. Might be asking the impossible but might as well ask.

Basically no. The XBOX came out a full year before HDMI did.

The best that you can do, is get a component to HDMI box. One that also takes digital audio in for 5.1, or normal stereo RCA for just stereo.

Break it apart, and solder it, inside to the correct parts of the motherboard. It's the best you can hope for if you want a HDMI port on the back of your XBOX. That's the best we can do right now.

Otherwise, leave the component to HDMI box, on the outside.

No-one has bothered to take the RGB signal from the XBOX (One that's had the VGA BIOS installed) and created a dedicated RGB2HDMI internal mod. Mainly, because IMHO, that not only installing and soldering a RGB2HDMI mod, you'd have to install a hacked BIOS either through a TSOP/modchip/softmod.

Other mods that you see on the N64 or Gamecube, are doing just that, they're taking the RGB, and kicking it out as HDMI.

There's gadgets for the PS2/Wii that fit into their fancy AV ports. I can't see why, someone doesn't make one for the XBOX as well.

I'd thought of getting the PS2 one, and modding that into an XBOX. I've just never been bothered to. I've got far too many unfinished mods as it is. LOL

The one I've thought about fitting for real though is this one...

But I have a framemeister these days, so I can't be bothered! :)

I hope someone comes out with a plug and play HDMI adapter, similar to the GameCube HDMI adapter that came out recently...

The PS2 one would IMO be a bad idea for such an internal mod because, at least on the PS2, it´s highest supported resolution ist 480p, if you force 720p with GSM or select 1080i in GT4 you get no signal. So unless you can fix that I wouldn´t use it for an XBox mod.

But I can´t understand either why no one ever bothered with creating an XBox to HDMI Adapter that just plugs into the system, though considering that we can get such a device for the Gamecube now that supports 480p and even mixes the audio into the HDMI Signal I still have hopes left that someone will eventually make one for the XBox.

The plug-n-play for the Gamecube DOL-001 has easy access to the pure digital video signals.

To do something similar on the Xbox, the GPU's digital RGB signals need to be accessed before being processed by the Conexant, Focus or Xcalibur video encoder.

Is there a way to get Modchips or a new Bios to access the RGB signals from the GPU? I think if we set our minds to it we can start something big here.

Just the thought of an OG Modded Xbox with HDMI gives such excitement, with XBone OG support be limited and no OGX Emulator in sight, I think this could be our best bet to experience OG games in HDMI.

Seems that N64 freak over at XBMC4XBOX is developing a HDMI plug and play. Granted it's component to HDMI, but it's a start for the basic user.

Though it shows bars for 720p at the moment. XC-3730C even commented on the thread! LOL

As long as it supports all resolutions and 5.1 Audio when it´s released that´s actually all I need since I´m mostly interested in reducing the amount of cables I have behind my shelf. Currently I´m using a external Component to HDMI Converter with the HDMI going directly to the TV and the Audio to my A/V Reciever because otherwise it wouldn´t work.

I found this interesting video. DIY:

Cheaper than this adapter will be very difficult to find.

It's basically the same idea I had with the PS2 one. Just that that person actually pulled their finger out, and did the actual mod.

The problem with that, is that it doesn't have audio digital out.

So it's safe to say the internal mod at this link would be best ?

Has anyone ever used a component to HDMI adapter with digital audio output to get digital audio through HDMI?

According to this pinot diagram, pin 13 is for SDPIF digital audio:
