What is the best Disc Drive for the OG Xbox?

Postby YeshuaNazare » Tue Mar 20, 2018 2:47 pm

Just really want a clear definitive (or as close to it as possible) answer as to which Disc drive the community considers to be the best in terms of reliability, quality, and functionality? I mean for years I have heard people swear samsung/panasonic, but I have also heard people say the long time trolled thompson is the best in terms of its build quality and ability to read scratched discs. I totally get all of these drives are over a decade old just looking for some general input.

I am a fan of the Philips drive. I, have one in my test Xbox, and another in my main Xbox, and they both read discs of all types without issue. Samsung drives constantly suffer from the sticky dive tray issue, and with all the Xbox systems I have come across, only 1 of those was decent.

Of course, if you want the best drive possible, modding a Samsung 616 PC DVD-ROM drive would be ideal.

Samsung drives, if you don't mind having to nudge the drive sometimes to close it. (Or you could boil the rubber band in the drive for a few seconds to shrink it, that fixes it I hear)

Plays everything you throw at it. I love mine.

Other than the Thompson's, I think they all are pretty decent. With that said I have one that still works. A dead philips as well so those are perfect either. The Samsung X00603-005, if I had to pick one, would be my favorite. I also have the same exact looking drive that says Toshiba-Samsung X00603-005 and it is seems to be really good too.
