Upgrading Xbox's Harddrive

Postby djantzen101 » Thu Jun 21, 2018 6:13 am

I am looking at upgrading the hard drive of my softmodded original xbox, and I was hoping for some suggestions. I saw this one: https://www.ebay.com/i/253666067445?chn=ps, and I have no idea whether or not it would be compatable, and I'm looking to get as much space out of it as I can, as it still has the stock hardrive in it. Thanks in advance.

For the price of that IDE drive, I suggest purchasing a WD Blue 2TB SATA drive, HDE IDE-to-SATA adapter and 80-wire 40-pin UltraATA cable (24" long but an 18/19" can be finagled to work).

2TB vs 750GB

Better yet, spend more for a StarTech IDE2SAT2 IDE-to-SATA adapter instead of the HDE.

It's been hit and miss on HDE's quality control - many DOA units. Order at least 2 if not 4 to make sure you get a working adapter. Or, just spend ~$17 (on sale) once for a working StarTech.

Look to Amazon - WD 2TB Blue SATA HDD: $46 refurbed to $60 new and the other 2 items.

SATA HDD/adapter combo requires the higher speed cable for reliable operation.

would the SATA still be lockable? I had heard in the past that they weren't and required a hardmodded system?

I've never had a SATA drive that was not LOCKABLE!

Get the Western Digital 2TB Blue for max storage capacity.

Thank you very much for your help. I assume that it still works with the hotswapping method?

No need to use a PC. Oh yeah, if you don't have one, purchase a Molex power splitter, $2, for Xbox HDD cloning.

Set adapter to SLAVE device. Power both HDDs with the Xbox. Run Chimp 261812. Swap IDE connection from Xbox DVD to the new HDD when prompted. Press (A) when ready to continue the cloning process. Once the cloning operation has finished, lock the drive and shutdown. Set adapter to MASTER device on the IDE bus and swap new with old HDD.

Add additional content to the new F and G - 927.78GB partitions.

If you want to use a PC, and have a hard drive USB adapter or dock, as long as you have an EEPROM backup of your motherboard, you could use XboxHDM to set up and lock your new drive.
No swapping or Chimp needed, and much cleaner/safer (just my opinion).

I do however reccomend that if you do get a SATA hard drive and SATA to IDE adapter (especially if you are gonna do a hotswap), put some electrical tape above where the hard drive connects to the adapter, so you dont have metal on the adapter touching the drive.

That's just my preferred option.
