I need a refresher been away for a long time

Postby rich1875 » Thu Jun 21, 2018 8:25 pm

Hi guys

I have an xbox that I softmodded about 7years ago.

It has XBMC as the dash, emulators and a few games saved on an 80GB HDD I fitted. Done a fan mod(80mm I think??) so I used to be okay doing xbox stuff but a lot has changed and I've forgotten a lot too in the time my XBOX has been stored away and neglected :(

I'd like to install a bigger HDD so I can spruce things up a little. Whats the most straightforward way of doing this? I'm thinking some kind of cloning operation(Chimp) and moving games emulators etc from E: and F: via ftp back and forth from my laptop??

I've read quite of info a lot of info today I just need a push to get me going. Thanks for any replies

That's how I upgraded my HD. I got an IDE to SATA converter and put in a 250 GB SATA drive along with a silent fan mod and I am amazed how much quieter it is to run.

I use FTP to copy games and videos to my Xbox when I need to.

Hey thanks for the reply !!!

Cool so even though I'm using my already softmodded 80GB drive to to clone to a bigger one I shouldnt hit any issues?

I'm going the sata route too. Would you be able to suggest a sata drive and adapter? I just want to make sure I buy something that wil work without trawling through the list of compatible hard drives thats available on google.

Don't forget to upgrade the IDE cable too, needs to be 80 wire 40 pin for Sata. Use the latest version of chim as its great. Have a search through the XBox modding forum for tons of info.

I think I may have done this previously but I will be sure to check when I open up the casing again. Thanks for the tip

  1. WD Blue 2TB SATA HDD - $46 refurb to $60 new at Amazon
  2. StarTech IDE2SAT2 or HDE IDE-to-SATA adapter (MASTER/SLAVE jumper required of an adapter to use the Xbox for cloning.) - StarTech $17-25 BEST adapter or HDE $6-7ea. buy more than one HDE adapter (2pks available maybe buy 2 of them for 4 adapters) to make sure you get one that works. Bad QA noted by many purchasers of the HDE.
  3. Molex Y power splitter (power both drives from the Xbox's single Molex power connector) - $2-7ea.
  4. UltraATA 80-wire 40-pin 24" long cable (18/19" can be convinced to work with a bit of finagling (twists and folds and/or removing and re-installing the central connector at a better location). $4-8

Download Chimp 261812 from here.
