Xbox - Flashing Red Light

Postby Rattlehead502 » Sun Oct 01, 2017 11:20 pm

Hey guys just soft modded an Xbox for a friend last week.

I've got the larger 160 gig drive installed and running xbmc. Worked perfect for maybe going on 2 weeks now with 60 or so games installed.

Strange issue, I power the console on load up a game play for hours. Power it back down and i get a flashing red light when i reset the console. I figured maybe it was overheating xbmx is saying CPU is around 100f after playing for awhile but never powers down while in use. But if i wait 15 sec or so it loads up green light no problem. Doesn't matter if it was off all night i turn it on for 2-3 min and reset it will flash red then i have to wait 20 secs. Fear fan is still working fine, and like i said if i wait 15-20 secs to will resume with a green light and run normally.

Thanks all for any input!

100 Celsius or 100 Fahrenheit?, there's a BIG difference.

If its saying 100c its without a doubt overheating and you more than likely need to change the thermal paste, Arctic MX-4 is the best choice of paste as its non-conductive so it wont short out any components if it makes contact with them (like Arctic Silver 5) and its an 8 year paste.

Hey all thanks for the response.

XMBC is reading CPU 97 Fahrenheit Ive had it idle for a few hours now even after heavy gaming and i wait the 15 seconds then boot ive never seen it over 105. It's odd tho because it will be cold and if i even reset it few minutes after it will flash a red light. All i have to do it wait 15-20 secs and its fine. Strange..

Its the Crystal Green Xbox. Looks like manufacture date is 2004.

Let me know if you need more details thanks.

A lot of Halo editions are version 1.6, but could also be 1.2-1.5. I was just thinking if it's a version 1.6 then the caps near the CPU are known for going bad and maybe could be causing the brief red flash.

If it is a 1.2-1.5 then it could be the clock cap leaking and eating up the board, or I've run into a few that have bad eeproms and that will flash red with no video, so maybe that is going bad and having trouble reading from it, or just on it's way to fragging

If is flashing red and displaying an error message then it's easier to fix, those are just the most common problems with xbox's

How can i check for certain if its a 1.6 or not?

The screen just stays blank with no video or sound and the light flashes red. dvd tray opens and closes, can hear the fans and everything. If possible bad eeprom any possible way to fix?

I'll open it up tomorrow and have a look inside and see if i can find anything blown or leaking. Appreciate all the input.

Just by looking at the board. Yes you can remove the eeprom and solder in a new one, but if it is fragging and flashing red then it can be almost impossible to fix a frag trying to find out what is actually causing it. You should be able to tell if it's the eeprom by dumping and reading it.

There is no flashing red LED error for the Xbox.
( unless it goes green for a second or two then flashes red )

Normally a flashing red LED is a BFM bios or a recoverdash from a softmodded system.
( my softmod uses a flashing red LED when the shadowc partition is not mounted and loads a recovery menu )

    1) What softmod did you use?

    2) At what point dose the LED start flashing red? after the Xlogo, flubber or as soon as you power on the system?

Now have you have been arsing about with the eeprom?

There is no way to corrupt the eeprom or erase it, when running the Xbox. That requires an external flasher.
( all the tools used to write the eeprom on the Xbox do it I a safe manor, that includes all dashboards that allow editing sound or video options )

It could have corrupted on its own, but that’s extremely unlikely. You would have a flashing green LED error, and your system would not allow you to eject the tray if the eeprom is corrupt or damaged.

Corrupt eeprom or wrong flashed eeprom symptoms.
No video.
Fan speeds up then slows down to normal after a few seconds.
LED flashes green fast, then slow and finally solid.
Dvd drive won’t open, eject button becomes useless.

Hey sorry for the late reply was tied up with work.

I believe the softmod i used to install everything was the SID installer. I'm running XBMC atm.

Tried it again today played a game for 30-40min. powered console down turned it back on. Flashed green for a second or so then red flashing non stop after that. TV states no signal like i mentioned before fans running, dvd tray open and closes.

it doesn't even make it to the Xbox box screen at all. As soon as i power it down and back on it does like i mentioned above. If i wait 10-20 secs and reboot again its golden and can play a game for hours.

After playing that game for 40 min or so both CPU and GPU are around 100 Fahrenheit temp wise according to xbmc.

Thanks

I suggest upgrading to mine and if it continues then it’s a hardware issue.

That’s all we can suggest at this point as it’s a elimination process.
