You can install a new larger HDD (stock HDD is 8GB) but it will require a little bit of work. (Max size HDD: 2TB) Most of the original Xbox HDD's are dying anyway so even if you found one with a working HDD it would need to be replaced ASAP.

Since the HDD is already dead, you'll need to read the configuration EEPROM contents with an EEPROM reader/PonyProg SW on a PC (video tutorial) or with a Raspberry PI and PiPROM software (tutorial).

With the eeprom.bin backup, setting up a new HDD is fairly simple. The hardest part is obtaining the EEPROM contents so you can lock the new HDD.

The easiest method of fixing it would be installing a modchip, the methods above that kaos mentioned work, but installing a $12 aladdin xt2 modchip is by far the easier method,

installing a modchip bypasses the need for the eeprom (the file that locks the HDD to the motherboard) so all you need to do is pop in a new hard drive, boot a copy of hexen utility disc and set up a new drive from the menu.

keep in mind that you will likely want to use a SATA hard drive as the older IDE hard drives are hard to find in a working state these days (let alone for a cheap price) and if that is the case, you'll need an IDE to Sata adaptor (also referred to as a sata to pata adaptor) and youll also need an 80 wire ATA cable ( the Cable that connects the hard drive and dvd tray to the motherboard) the one that is originally in the xbox is a 40 wire ATA and it causes a bottleneck with the adaptor, just get a 40cm or bigger 80wire ATA and your good to go.

Let me look when I get home but I believe I have some Aladdins. $8 shipped if I do.

aliexpress.com's A+++ Electronics Sales ($3.31 each, 10 for $29.25 FREE S&H just takes time...)

https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?ca ... xt=xt+4032 There are a couple other resellers listed here too.

TheTechDoc's Method 2: installing a modchip is easier. Been working with softmods too much recently, forgot about modchips when I responded.

Good luck returning something like that to Goodwill. Electronics are usually non-returnable.

Aladdins will work on 1.6s (and are really the easiest way to mod that version as TSOP isn't an option).

Install isn't too difficult if you're steady with a soldering iron. There are a few wires/steps to perform, make sure you have flux if you attempt. I've also ordered from Aliexpress, got 5 chips for about $15. Shipping takes a bit, but can't complain with price.

Here's an install guide, but there are great videos
I recommend checking out wheelmans video on Youtube :

What's the difference between an XT and and XT+ (is that the same as a XT+ 2)?
