Original Xbox analog stick replacement options?

Postby XC-3730C » Mon Nov 13, 2017 8:26 pm

I want to replace the analog sticks on a couple of my S-controller, but I can't find any online that are specifically for an S-controller. What are my options? Do 360 analog sticks work on an S-Controller?

dont use replacement sticks for xbox one. they dont fit
or you can use sticks from another controller, maybe a junk 3rd party controller with good sticks
beware of some third party controllers. the actual stick part that goes into the thumbstick is a different shape (non standard) and you wont be able to buy replacement thumbsticks for those

I should have been more specific. I don't need the analog stick mechanism, but rather just the actual plastic sticks/nubs.

Will the ones for 360 or Xbox One work?

360 ones work perfectly like others have said and this only came up a month or so ago on TiZ plus you can get an array of colors too so that's nice, some of the later S controllers I've seen, clear and clear green use almost identical ones but they perish quickly due to their age of course, just like yours XC.

PS2/3 ones like 360 are really easy to pick up on fleabay still in 2s, 4s and 10s and they work as you can see just fine, they push through a bit snug as the controllers hole is just 20mm but they work nice.

You can definitely junk another controller for them, but be aware nearly all 3rd party ones use a metal shaft, which is great scrap for 3rd party ones of course as you can mix the brands in most cases, my favourite MadCatz controller has 4Gamers thumbsticks.

Here is what metal shaft ones look like, Thrustmaster on the left and MadCatz on the right..

Image

All Microsoft OG Xbox and 360, Sony PS2 and about 99% of Sony PS1 dual shock controllers use the plastic ones, Duke on the left, S on the right, these are the same and can be de-soldered and swapped out so don't throw away anything.

Image

If you fancy a change, change it's color with it's D-Pad as well. the top part is nearly the same and screws in from the bottom, goes to show how much of the S pad inspired the brilliant 360 one, eh !

I like them better. They feel a little tighter as the stick is wider. So you have slightly less movement. IMO that's a good thing as the extra slack isn't used in anyway. The heads are definitely more comfortable.

The install is a tad tricky. Put them on then shove them through the case holes. The heads are a little bigger than the hole, but they will go through if forced.

That's a good tip ^. Thanks.

I've started thinking about replacing at least one of the sticks on my most used Controller S as the rubber on one side of the left stick has started to wear down to the plastic underneath on the left side.

I have other Xbox controllers which I could cannibalise but they're all working so its pointless. But I also have a number of old PS/PS2 Dualshock 1/2 controllers I've kept for parts too. Knowing they can also be used for the Controller S stick replacement as well is very useful.

Try them out, you will know pretty quick if you don't like them. Be sure and swap the right for the left. In other words, you want the least wore one on the left.

As far as precision gameplay, it probably is a slight improvement. Though the Xbox controller isn't the best for that IMO.

If analog feels too loose, is it possible to fix it?
Or do i need to buy whole analog replacement mechanism?
