XBOX 128mb Ram Upgrade 2nd attempt, no good news

Postby Maddglow05 » Thu Mar 22, 2018 11:54 pm

Hellp everyone. As always when I dont know a way out from an xbox issue I turn to theisozone.
This is now my second attempt at the OG xbox 128mb Ram upgrade.
The first one failed when I accidentally burned off one of the legs on the motherboard, I never got into the dash or anything, I was reflowing all the legs on the ram chips for several times when IT HAPPENED. It fragged all the way , then I removed all the ram chips and now the xbox has no video, anyone any ideas how yo fix that?

Now my second attempt, this time I salvaged 4 ram chips off of a broken xbox 1.6 with a heat gun, they came off easy and the legs looked clean.
I didnt have any trouble installing them, I use a cheap 20 euro soldering iron from amazon which should get the job done with the tip that looks like a circle that was sliced
If you understand.
So all the ram chips installed and again.. FRAGs, red and yellow light. Then after going over them like 5 times, meaning reflowing with the soldering rion all the 400 pins which did not help at all I reflowed the chips with the heat gun then it booted to my suprise. The joy did not last long though, it froze all the damn time and on the next boot it shows me weird graphical glitches upon boot.. So i tried to do the ram upgrade for 6h straight a second time and still could not do it. I feel like the most retarded person in the earth. WTH am I missing, what am I doing wrong? Can you give me any meaningful tips?

Despair, Despair..

No good advice but I empathize with you. My soldering skills are nothing to brag about so I'm too scared to even attempt it.

I think it doesn't take a master soldering guy to tell you the following:

Don't ever go cheap when it comes to soldering equipment.

That's prolly one of the main reasons why this project was a bust.

Were the Hynix or Samsung chips you salvaged from the 1.6 console? Why was it dead? Bad RAM? What part number is printed on them?

Hynix won't work on any other Xbox and possibly not on any different Xbox as the timing settings have to be programmed into the EEPROM for them to even work. (At least, that's what some expect the last 64 bytes are used for in a v1.6 console. These bytes are all 0x00's on v1.0-1.5 consoles but no so on a v1.6.)

P.S. Best to purchase the same part number unused Samsung DDR chips x4.

They are Samsung chips
K4D2F3238F QC50

I know that hynix chips on samsung chips wont work and the other way around.

Yeah a better soldering iron could help but I dont see the big issue, I tsopped and rghed consoles with this iron no problem, I ought to buy a better one will try again. Im not giving up till I have my 128mb lol

After reflowing all 4 ram chips with 3 different soldering tips and it still not working, giving me glitches, FRAGs and now just solid green light and no video Im at a loss.
I give up and will remove all 4 chips and hope the xbox still functions properly.

sounds like you have a short on one or more of the ram chips you soldered in.
smear some solder paste/GEL on the pins
and use a heat gun to melt it through.
this should help separate the short if any.
it is also be most likely one of the ram chips on the bottom considering you have a green light.!
