Mega Drive pcb question

Mega Drive pcb question

Postby Adam1987 » Sun Dec 17, 2017 10:14 am

Hi everyone!

Today i got a package with a bunch of Sega Mega Drive games and of course i decided to instatly clean them. I got two copies of Sonic 2 and when i disassembled the cartridges i found out it's not exactly the same.
Here are some pictures:

My question is: is there any difference between the versions of the games or the quality of the board?
Is there any website i can check these?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Only difference I can see is really the linking of traces for potential rerouting, but with no electrical connectivity, there's no effective difference. The upper PCB doesn't have the right angles (as in 90º) in the trace layout, so it may be the mildly superior of the two, but at this level it doesn't even matter.

Other option is that they are/possible different REVISIONS of Sonic.
Unfortunately, you need to dump the chip to find out if code is different

SEGA made at least 2 or 3 revisions of Sonic 2... you can find dumps of them as ROMs online (commonly they label it REV00, REV01, REV02, etc.)
then you could try dumping the cartridges yourself to see if they match to any of the revisions...
