Does the Saturn take longer to read discs?

Does the Saturn take longer to read discs?

Postby DarkTheThief » Thu Sep 21, 2017 5:28 am

Basically, when I was playing Resident Evil, I heard the laser move before a character started to speak, and it seemed like it took the character a second or so longer to speak than it did in the PS1 Version. Is this normal, or is the laser possibly going bad? (I hope not!)

Not 100% Sure.!

That would mean it is caching onto ram also know as a buffer !
that in theory would make the game run smoother.!

^^ could very well be that, there was a few games that did have a bit of a lip-sync issue.
@ op.
if there's no stuttering or nasty breaks in the sound, probably okay.
get a cd-dvd lens cleaner on it just for the sake of console maintenance.
try other games and compare how bad the offset is. :?
all the best. :D

Both consoles have 2x CD-ROM speeds. The loading speed for each game is determined by how well the console caches information and how efficiently the data on the CD is distributed so that the console can access it quickly. Resident Evil on the Saturn is less optimized than the PSX version so yes, there are some brief loading stutters in places.

You are playing on real hardware, right?

If not, take a look at this (from Reddit) :

[Saturn] Reduce input lag in Mednafen

Emulation of Saturn games in Mednafen is awesome but if you feel too much the input lag, here's a fix :
Set ss.midsync to 1 in mednafen-09x.cfg (will require much more CPU)
After that, I'm able to play Sonic 3 in Sonic Jam without complaining of the jump lag anymore!
