i can't recall i have not touched one since a long long time ago. until 2 days ago they felt stiff for some odd reason. found an atari for sixty bucks but i'm not sure if it's worth checking it out (was going buy it has an x-mas gift for my uncle but...)

If they are the original SQUARE controllers. HANDLE WITH CARE - They break PISS Easy.
There is a circle of plastic that controls the contact points. These snap and make controller useless.
I know, I destroyed several of em as a Kid !

Image
This type work great (I have Atari Original version, this is a remake)
They are 2000% stronger than the square controllers. and have 2 fire buttons... (7800)
You have to rewire the second button to bridge the first button else pressing it crashes 2600...

I have a couple, they are that stiff,
fun fact though, you can actually plug one into a Sega Genesis and attempt to play games with it,
it controls extremely badly but it's fun to mess around with on a Street Fighter match or something.

Just use a Genesis/Megadrive controller if unsure.
