PS2 hard drive question

Postby smbruno » Sun Dec 10, 2017 6:34 pm

I converted a network adapter to sata and formatted a 1tb hd via winhip. I added a bunch of games from my pc and reached the 256 image limit in winhip. Everything works fine with OPL. Is there a workaround to add more games? If I format the hd using ULE instead of winhip does that help? There is still 250gb free on the hd. Any help is appreciated. Thank you

Use HDL_Dumb to add more games
There IS a UI that allows Batch installs as HLD_Dumb you have to install one by one usually...
Someone else may be able to point you to it

Also worth a future note : IF you max out and get a 2TB HDD, you'll need to use a special bit of software called uLaunch 2TB Edition as WinHIIP will screw the format up....

This is on TiZ (Possible new version out)

Thanks for the quick response. I had a 1tb laying around so went with that. I'll try getting hdl_dumb. I used to use that on my old xp tower and ide drives and remember adding games 1 by 1.

another tip : Don't install a shedload of games at a time. Reason is that OPL/HDL have to index the new data, this can take ages.... The more you install all in one go, the longer this wait will be.. It looks like the PS2 has crashed.... It hasn't.... Don't reset else next boot it starts again !!
Soon as the list appears you can turn off and add more games...

Another wise idea.... Install the games you want to keep at beginning of the drive (Never to be removed!) all the not sure games at end of the drive. This helps cut down FRAGMENTATION as the start of the drive is SOLID data and nothing will be removed...
If fragmentation happens near END of the drive you can remove the games after the last SOLID data chunk (ie extract to PC) where the fragmentation starts and reinstall them. Planning ahead can help as NO Defrag program works with internal HDD (That I know of)

I'm using HDL Dump Gui 2.3

You have to select games 1 by 1, adding them to jobs, then after selected the games, just start jobs, and they will be all installed into the HDD.

There are a couple of ID games that may be not recognized by the program (like J&D the lost frontier PAL), in this case, just write the correct ID manually.

I am out of touch with PS2 stuff and releases at the moment as I ain't played on PS2 in over 6 months due to TV being fekked... So you could be right....

All I know is that I had to use ule2TB edition to format the 2TB correctly

Here you go : http://www.ps2-home.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1895 wLaunch at PS2-Home :)

Just a clarification... Actually it's better to load a shedload of games :D I explain:

HDLoader make the list from scratch every time a game is installed/disinstalled and the time it takes to create the list depend on the total number of games you have into the HDD.

i.e. I have 390 games installed. If I add one game, HDLoader will create from scratch a 390 game's list (about 40 minute, depending on the HDD and kind of NA used) and so on for every other game I'll install.

Therefore if I have 20 games to add, it's better to add them all in a once, so I'll wait the time to create a 410 game's list (about 43 minutes) only once, instead of waiting 40 minutes 20 times!

OPL doesn't create any list file. It just read the game's partitions every time you start the device, doesn't matter if you add or delete games. The time it will take to create the list only depends on the total number of games installed (22/23 seconds for about 400 games, with a 2tb 2,5" Sata III HDD).

I totally agree with the fragmentation matter. You can check with winhiip your installation order (or even with OPL disabling the automatic sorting). If you really have to delete games, always start from the last to the first installed games.

Okay... Just to clarify my last comment...
When I got my 1st TB HDD for PS2, I filled it in one foul swoop...
THEN I plugged it in...... 3 Hours later HDL loaded lol

I usually install batches of 25-30 games at a time now days....

Great info though Badore90

I had imagined it :D Btw without knowing you made the right thing. If you then had removed just one game, HDL would have take other 3 hours to rebuild the list.

HDL is slower than OPL even once the list it's created (if OPL takes 20 seconds to show the list, HDL takes 45).
However I have my HDL list updated just in case of emergencies. I've never needed to use it so far, all +400 games work perfectly with OPL.

Thanks for all the responses. I formatted hdd uising ULE and now adding batches of games using the jobs in HDL Dump Gui 2.3. Looks like I will be able to exceed the 256 image limit. This was far more exciting than the Buffalo Bills game.
