Got the lasers, a few questions

Postby HaloSlayer255 » Thu Jan 12, 2017 5:47 am

Hello all,

Well the new laser units came in the mail yesterday. Forgive me, I know I should probably understand this by now but I've read so much the last few days, and I've never really tried this on my own. But I removed the anti-static solder blob and installed one of the new lasers in a 39001 to test, and nothing.

I did use lenschanger and create a backup eeprom file of the stock open face HD7 laser unit. I changed the laser eeprom setting to KHS-400C and proceeded to test a few cds and dvds, no results yet. It seems to try to boot some of the discs but hangs indefinitely where the PS1/PS2 boot screen should show.

I am guessing that I need to use a multimeter and follow this a few steps at a time:
http://ps2parts.com/laser_adjustment.html forgive my noobish-ness in this matter, probably been reading too much in this late hour.

Thanks all in advance,

Chances are that you will need to pot tweak the lazer to get the right setting. Usually its a little screw that needs to be turned very minutely using a multimeter. Its a similar way that is used on Xbox 360 lazers.

Be careful with that lenschanger software. I successfully changed the laser on 2 out of 3 v9/10's. However, I just corrupted the eeprom on a ps-2 I tried changing the laser too. Now the fan won't spin and the dvd tray will not eject.

Will need to test again on the new lasers, two ps2s a 39001 and a 50001 have been lenschanged to khs-400c. I also ordered some new laser guide arms but it seems to cause the buzzing sound on the 50001, I am guessing that the tray doesn't eject in this case because the laser never hits the switch at the center of the assembly.

This new laser is at 1000 ohms will reduce downto 950 on each pot later tomorrow and see if I can get this sorted out. It seems to activate but I also accidentally dropped the white cogs on the sides with the hex pattern on them, reset that to the lowest setting.

Thanks for the help an advice,

Tweaked the 39001 laser down to around 850 ohms, it was reading ps1 ccosfor a bit but still struggles with them, they eventually load but slowly. In contrast to this ps2 cds spin and play normally.

Will proceed with the 50001 later tomorrow.

If I sold these consoles I would include a free replacement laser unit, tweaked and with the solder bridge removed.

The first two lasers are tested, on the 50001 I will need to re-adjust the white cogs since it detects but ps2 media is detected as dvd video. Will update when all lasers are tested.
