I Want My Fellow Member's Advice

I Want My Fellow Member's Advice

Postby maxpc » Wed Jan 11, 2017 4:46 am

OK. So I saw some comments here recently which related to torrents and how this was so "old-fashioned", so to speak. I was too embarrassed to say anything because in this site I am already someone who is incredibly "under-teched". I know that's not a word. What I mean by it is, the majority of the members here make me feel I really don't know much and I have to admit, the majority of the stuff I read here is over my head. I'm not dumb and believe the more I read of more experienced poster's will "miraculously", all of a sudden make sense. That is why I continue to read and try to make sense of things that aren't entirely clear to me. Anyway, I digress.

Here is where I could become a target for people who might want to make someone like me feel inadequate. However, I know I am safe on this site.

What is wrong with torrents? I use them for movies and TV and do know all of the risks.

Don't hit me too hard with what could happen to me because I'm pretty confident it's not going to happen.

it's not by just reading that you'll get experienced, you also have to experiment by yourself what you read. reading is just a theorical knowledge. knowledge is still a good thing to have, but experience comes with time and practice/experiment.

Aren't they talking about the torrents like that in a sarcastic way? I mean, that's what I use the most too. I don't know what's new to be honest. Maybe because I am "under-teched" too...

@DasMeier

I'm sure they were being sarcastic. It confuses me as to why. Is it because you couldn't hide yourself? Torrent's are the SHIT as far as I'm concerned. You just better use a VPN, Proxy, or just not give a Fuck whether you get caught or not.

torrents are not as good as files on a real server

torrents are peer to peer if no one speeds the file is dead

There's nothing wrong with using a torrent to grab what you want.

The biggest potential problem with them is that they are the most common method used by IP protection firms to nab pirates - but if you live somewhere that they can't file a complaint with it's a non-issue.

Maxpc, me old mate. There is no one, on this site, as stupid as me.
But, I have learned so much, from reading posts in the forums.
And, opening myself up, and letting the more experienced
members, give me the low down on how to do stuff.
With regard to advice, everyone, has an opinion, but it is up to you,
to decide, what is best for your situation. And, as Wakinafuf says, experiment.
What's great about this place mate, is you don't get judged, unless of course
you choose to ignore sound advice, and then bitch about it.
This is a virtual library, use it mate.

All the best

Torrents used to be king in all regards but it's kind of apples and oranges now, and it depends on the content. For older games, sites like this one are the fastest and most convenient. For the newer stuff you pretty much have to use torrents. Movies you can stream. TV shows you'll probably never find complete on streaming sites but you can still find a lot of complete sets on torrents.

I have used torrents less over time as the same content became available on websites but they're still great for everything else.

TORRENT - Basically, there is no such thing as a SECURE Torrent and you can get caught VERY Easily by DCMA Agents. If you use LEGAL files then torrents are wicked, really fast and you get the files with little effort. Copyrighted material however..... You do not want to use torrents !

There are Peer2Peer (PS2) engines out there which are very good but not as fast as torrents.
Most of these Older systems still work great and are more secure.

eMule, DC++, UseNet, NewsBIN are just a few I can think of. I don't use hardly any of em though nowdays.

Bewarned : ALL P2P software carry's filth. You should not let MINORS use them unsupervised as you never know what your getting from some users.

I only use torrents for legal file transfer.

I'm also "under-teched", I don't know anything (and that's why I can't help here too much) and all my experience is based on: (dumb voice) "I pick this thing, then I solder it to this other thing, and it turns on..." and if someone tries to make me feel like a dumb, I don't give a shit.
Just read and learn what you are really interested in, don't start "studying" things just to be the most popular little prince of your school (I knew people who did that)

And torrents are the shit indeed. Technically, a file on a real server is better, but when most of the people uploads a 4GB file to sites like rapid gaytor or file al, splitted into 4 links, and you can only download a link per day, at the minimum speed possible, the torrent becomes a really good option. And after all my years of downloading, I also think it is way easier to find rare files on torrents. And by rare files, I just mean a simple discography of Judas Priest with an acceptable quality, that's not actually rare, but it could be more painful without torrents.

It really does come down to your country's copyright laws.
Live in Malta, torrents are the dogs bollocks , live in USA/UK you get fekked...

I live in spain and all the politicians here are just a bunch of old stealing fuckers with no fucking idea about this technologies. Yes, they are all old stealing fuckers, but that gives us some little benefits (in between all the disgraces), so at this moment, I don't have to worry about getting caught or something.

Btw, what's the worst thing that can happen to you if you live in USA/UK? I have heard that some copyright holders make torrent users pay some taxes, is that true?

Usually you get a fine of several hundred £/$
Some get kit confiscated and even face jail time (Group hackers like Razor1911)
Depends on how serious the company are about fekking you. BIG companys, you don't stand a chance due to their legal teams

We don't have much problems related to that in Brazil. We have laws, of course, but not even our governors care about them. Unless the FBI, CIA, SWAT, KGB or wathever wants to pay me a visit, in this case, I'm screwed for life.
