Reputation Question

Reputation Question

Postby Veliantx » Mon Mar 20, 2017 10:24 pm

How exactly does it function. As in, is there a time limit in which it can be given after a post is made? Nine out of ten topics (even ones that clearly show posts that have received rep) give me no option to give rep. A lot of times people say something helpful and I would like to give them rep but the site simply gives me no option to. The rep icon is present but there is no - + on either side for it to be interacted with. It seems completely random which posts do or do not let me give rep so I am curious what the mechanics behind it are.

I was thinking that might be it but I can actually see that rep has been given on some topics and am still unable to give it even in those sometimes. I have no clue really. Just one of those little annoyances that in the end don't matter much, but nag at you the more you see it.

Hell knows , the only "solution" is to check other posts of the member who you wish to rep. There is no explanation , noone has managed to solve the rep mystery. Jambo knows this problem for years but I guess he wants to protect the site from bad eye so he isn't fixing it

Regular users cant rep in all the topics, only some. You can however click on the users profile and leave them rep that way.

If your a mod you will be able to leave rep on all posts as you have greater permissions. Just the way it is. Its all about the permissions.

I think I remember catch mentioning something that back when TIZ had that premium thing going on, premium users (Gold names) where able to rep on any post while normal users (blue names) are restricted to certain topics. That's my two cents at least. Mods are able to rep any topic however.

Seems kind of pointless tbh. If reputation is supposed to represent your contribution to the site then this system is skewed if all your contributions happen to be in the wrong topics.

What makes you think reputation means everything in this site? Do you see the rep orgy that goes on when you greet someone new? Or when a mod makes a topic about something? The rep is just rep to me, why they put it here is I guess for the same purpose as you are mentioning.

Another thing is we also have had members here with lots of rep and guess what? They went complete man baby and trashed the site in different ways.

Thats kinda the point I was getting at ;D .. the rep system is pretty much pointless. It is not at all any kind of representation of a person's contributions to the site or community. For the marketplace a rating system makes sense as it represents a person's honesty and trustworthiness in trades, but as a reputation system on forums it serves no real purpose other than epeen.

A stump can rep you here.
I kind of see it as a game where the points make no difference.

Well that explains that much, I had no idea what the hell the rep points were for but I was getting buckets of em on my introduction post.

Rep used to mean something - now though - well look at the "Hello...friend?" post. (No harm to GARNER2015 meant)

As I'm writing this, they've got 90 rep points, just for saying Hello on their first post.

Rep means nothing. You get morons, down flagging you, because they don't understand a joke, posted in the joke section...? As already pointed out, loads of rep, just for saying Hello.

It's already been pointed out, that certain parts of the forum you can't even give rep, if you're just mortal. It's been requested from the Admin, to fix this problem for years, and years, but they've never bothered to try and fix it.

I throw some rep around for the fun of it, some times. If I was going to buy something from someone, I'd want to see their ebay rep.

The rep system is pointless imo, as it causes more harm than good, causing hostility amoungst users, especially the negative rep, as it is abused more so than often, because people don't understand a difference in an opinion or a joke for that matter, as mentioed already.

Good point, i would give you rep but it won't let me

Its not actually broken as such as its meant to be like it is. To me its a rough guide and that's all really. No one has to use it or take notice of it, but its a nice way to say thanks sometimes.
