Another cheap Xbox find

Another cheap Xbox find

Postby Berzerk » Mon Feb 19, 2018 11:54 pm

Picked it up for $5.99. This one came with the remote dongle. Everything looks to be working needs major cleaning going to either sell it or keep it as a spare.

Good find. I've picked up a couple Xboxes in the past that people claimed didn't work and all they needed was to be thoroughly cleaned out and a new fan. I still have one of those that is working great after 15 years.

I picked up 3 Xboxes from a thrift store here a while ago. All of them have flaky DVD drives.
Consider yourselves lucky if all they need is a cleaning.

I used to live near a retro game store where people would drop off their unwanted Xbox systems. I knew the people there, and they would sell me each system (and even made sure it had power and would display) for $8 each. Most just had a DVD drive that would stick. I wouldn't take the ones that would FRAG, and many of them were v1.0's, which I like (some would need the clock cap removed). I sold many of them with 500gb or 2TB drives to a guy who would use them as media servers.

Great find!

I recently did a softmod for a guy and he gave me a "broken" xbox as trade. I opened it up since i wanted to see if was a tsop candidate and it was and then i checked the dvd drive that had the bezel missing and opened that up. it was a samsung pc dvd drive modded for use with the xbox which in all the years I've messed around with xboxes i had never seen. it works great too faster speeds when installing games to the hard drive using a disc.

I think a lot of those places have caught onto the fact that many people buy those cheap and mod/resell.

I have a v1.0 that had the fan bearings begin to get very noisy, so I ended up finding a heatsink that was a close enough match for the heatsink in a v1.2, I think I got it from an old Pentium 4 CPU.

I had to break off the centre fins, and saw off some edges, but it ended up about the same weight and height as the heatsink from the v1.2, and it's been there for best part of 7 years now.

Which is better, small heatsink and fan of the v1.0, or larger heatsink with no fan for the later versions?

Great price, hard to pass up for that amount.

Can universal remotes be programmed to use the remote dongle? (I have a dongle too, no remote came with it though).

I have a Logitech Harmony 360 remote just like this:

I programmed it for use with the Xbox dongle. It's easy to program, as there is a Windows application for doing that, and customizing the physical/virtual buttons is great.
