Compulsive video-game playing now new mental health problem

Postby Berzerk » Tue Jun 19, 2018 10:02 am

Looks like they want to round us up and put us in straight jackets. How come I just have a funny feeling there is a secret agenda for this like putting a extra sintax on games and say it is paying for gaming mental health programs.

PUBLISHED: 06/18/18 06:45 AM EDTUPDATED: 06/18/18 06:00 PM EDT
GENEVA (AP) — The World Health Organization says compulsively playing video games now qualifies as a new mental health condition — a move that some critics warn may risk stigmatizing its young players.

In its latest revision to an international disease classification manual, the U.N. health agency said Monday that classifying "Gaming Disorder" as a separate condition will "serve a public health purpose for countries to be better prepared to identify this issue."

Dr. Shekhar Saxena, director of WHO's department for mental health, said WHO accepted the proposal that Gaming Disorder should be listed as a new problem based on scientific evidence, in addition to "the need and the demand for treatment in many parts of the world."

Dr. Joan Harvey, a spokeswoman for the British Psychological Society, warned that the new designation might cause unnecessary concern among parents and said only a minority of gamers would be affected.

Others welcomed the move, saying it was critical to identify video game addicts quickly because they are usually teenagers or young adults who don't seek help themselves.

"We come across parents who are distraught, not only because they're seeing their child drop out of school, but because they're seeing an entire family structure fall apart," said Dr. Henrietta Bowden-Jones, a spokeswoman for behavioral addictions at Britain's Royal College of Psychiatrists. She was not connected to WHO's decision.

Bowden-Jones said gaming addictions were usually best treated with psychological therapies but that some medicines might also work.

Dr. Mark Griffiths, who has been researching the concept of video gaming disorder for 30 years, said the new classification would help legitimize the problem and strengthen treatment strategies.

"Video gaming is like a non-financial kind of gambling from a psychological point of view," said Griffiths, a distinguished professor of behavioral addiction at Nottingham Trent University. "Gamblers use money as a way of keeping score whereas gamers use points."

He guessed that the percentage of video game players with a compulsive problem was likely to be extremely small — much less than 1 percent — and that many such people would likely have other underlying problems, like depression, bipolar disorder or autism.

LOL I blame game release bugs for all the chaos.....
If the bloody games worked right we wouldn't get pissed off so fast....
In 80's ARCADE games were the beast, Mortal Kombat - Satan's testicles....
Yawn.... But Mobiles don't cause any issues, just the games.....

Blame the games !

Yeah, the NHS here is already being asked to provide support. I'm sure there are a few out there with a genuine problem but this all sounds a bit daft.

"my kid wont turn off the console"- pull the f*cking plug and ban him for a week.

Its funny really because all i see from adults i know is a constant need to check their fucking phone. That and they moan about the kids being sat playing on a console but are happy for them to spend an entire evening sat staring at the TV.

I am just sensing a Liberal agenda tax and spend. Parent wants government to provide the nanny state so who will have to pay?

It's just another lame ass excuse in this fkd up generation we live in now to shift the blame onto Joe public when something goes tits up and then blame games, as the cause of it.

They have been trying for years to put the blame on video games, as a cause of violent behaviour and now they have got what they wanted and will use this now more and more when something happens in the future.

If it's not alcohol or drug addiction to complain about, something new has to be man made up by these so called health experts. Tbh, imo, gaming helps mental health like Anxiety and depression, as it's a go to tool to release stress and escape from real life problems.

You might aswell say every other type of hobbyist, collector and enthusiast is mentally ill.

I've been playing games since 1980ish.... I have a cassette tape of a spectrum game (48k) called "American Werewolf in London" - FIRST EVER GAME WITH A 18 CERT lol

I have cackled like an evil mofo shooting people in the nuts
I have destroyed entire worlds and inhabitants at the click of a button.
I have been really vindictive against some enemy and tear limbs from limb.
I have destroyed billions of Space Ships
I have let people die just because, why not.....
I have stolen, lied, cheated, murdered innocent people....
I have wiped out thousands of soldiers...

I cried...

Welcome to the world of gaming....

Better in the game, rather than in the street....

I believed what one person said that we are in another age of witch hunting like the 70’s and 80’s back then this was fueled by wacko religious groups that people who listened to Heavy Metal, played D&D and played with fantasy toys such as He-Man and Transformers would be swayed to the path of Satan. I even remember a poor kid that lived near me had to make paper drawn Transformers in secret to play with and his parents would never let him play games. This time it seems to be fueled by Socialist Liberals.

ok I have a degree in Psychology and the major cheat to calling something a disorder is to tag it with "when it interferes with everyday life". So to take this to the most ridiculous extreme. Hugging my 5 year old granddaughter is a disorder when it interferes with everyday life.

Let's be honest Parents need to ... Parent. Set limits for kids. Don't let your kids sit in front of a screen all day because it is easy and lets you do what you want. If a parent uses a screen to babysit the kids... they are too selfish and lazy to have children.

So I guess this should be totally out of the equation then. Remember what they said about it the machine is running simulations of world war 3 every minute. Forgot Happy 40th Space Invaders you have warped all our minds.

And much more common. Almost everyone is a social media addict these days. A true videogame addict is much more rare.
