what do you do when your gaming pc is maxed out?

what do you do when your gaming pc is maxed out?

Postby dreamcast459 » Sat Nov 18, 2017 5:16 am

what do you do when your gaming pc is maxed out but it's not enough??? silly question i know

but my gaming pc has the following specs
xeon w3690 which is the same as the i7 990X
24 gigs ddr3 ram
AMD rx 470 4gb gddr5 ram
1920x1080p led monitor

my pc maxes out every game game i have thrown at it on high or ultra. including doom 4 and the witcher 3, the only game it doesnt max out is call of duty WW2 but i can get that for my ps4.

so my question to you fellow gamers is what does one do when thier gaming pc has been maxed out for the games they play as well as for the screen res they game on? i dont see my self going higher than 1080p and anything other than the RX470 or GTX 1060 is considered overkill for 1080p

just curious what you guys would do in my shoes or what you think

You can use supersampling with VSR (AMD) or DSR (Nvidia), see if something in the configs can let you take the settings further, or use SweetFX/ENB graphics modifications (however I haven't used ENB)

You haven't maxed out anything but your own current requirements.
VR is Step 2 you are entering now and with that you basicly want to have a system that can run current AAA titles in ~4K+ (SS) at 90fps and maybe even stream it live on Youtube or Twitch.

Do you still have the HP Z400? Maybe add a USB 3.0 card to it along with a 5.25 USB bay? Also,it's only SATA2 so you could buy a SATA 3 control card. Pleenty of stuff left for you to tinker with.

"what do you do when your gaming pc is maxed out?"
Accidentally, leave the pc on edge of table and get a 3 year old to "Push it off"
(After full backup of course !)

Accidentally FUBAR - Insurance ! Thank you !

Time to upgrade your motherboard, cpu and ram......then go up to a 1060 6gb or 1070.

The CPU and RAM shown are way above the spec required for any recent game to run in 1080p at 60+FPS all settings maxed.

The only 'weakness' is the medium level GPU with 'only' 4GB of VRAM. So if I was in this parlous state of concern, as others here have suggested, that's what I'd be looking to replace with something more even more powerful with 6GB or more of VRAM. That would probably also require most users buy a bigger PSU unless its already wastefully over-speced for the current system requirements.

I'd also change my primary drive to a SSD if not already done. Maybe, if I had the money, I'd bump the RAM up to 32GB but quite frankly for the cost of that you could probably get an even better spec GPU.

sorry you are wrong. That is an old cpu. The CPU will bottleneck any higher GPU. Its at its limit. To upgrade the GPU is pointless until the CPU is changed. And you can't do that without a new motherboard and ram. Please don't advise people to upgrade their GPUs past their CPUs capability its money wasted. Its all just advice at the end of the day.....that's what this thread asked for......however do whatever you want really. :D

what do you do when your gaming pc is maxed out?

you start trying other things like getting Wii/Wii-U games running on them,

Dont get caught up in the "Maxed out PC Master Race" game. its a waste, and you will never win, just waste money.

I have a 2nd gen I7, with a gtx 980ti(that I built for less than $500), and it chews through pretty much everything. VR like someone said is the next step. I got the Oculus Rift, and its pretty damn cool.

My GPU is a Radeon HD 5450. Good enough for me as I don't play demanding new PC games.

Cover everything in RGB LEDS.

or get a high refresh 1080 monitor
or 4k montior and repeat the cycle of upgrading

Obviously any GPU upgrade MUST be within the other parts of the system's capabilities to use or its pointless and, of course, it must be compatible. But are you saying a Xeon W3690 can't use a more powerful GPU than that specified ie. a R470 4GB?

I was not sure about the CPU so I did some research and used it to see how it would affect the frame rate of The Witcher 3 the OP said maxed out his system, one of the most graphically demanding games of recent times.

No matter which system requirements web site I used whilst the CPU was indeed reported as the bottleneck it showed that for the performance required: 1080p at Ultra settings, the CPU was not a problem.

The Witcher 3 recommends an i7-3770 and the Xeon W3690, despite its age, suggests it gives almost as good frame rates figures as that in direct comparison.

I checked again specifying a basic GTX 1080, currently one of the most recommended 8GB GPU types. I assumed compatibility admittedly but the results provided suggest a GPU like that would give a significant performance boost to a Xeon W3690 based system.

Surely upgrading the GPU, within the system capability, is going to be a far cheaper first choice than what you're effectively suggesting: build a new PC? The Xeon will not make the full use of the new GPU in the ways a newer i7 will but it should give better performance than the current one.

That's certainly what I'd try first as the figures suggest that simply upgrading to a newer i7, which would also require a new MB, is not going to give a huge performance enhancement with the current GPU. In other words the OP would have to replace the GPU whatever the case.

If the system was still maxing out what would be left that you could do other than rebuild the rest of the system around a more recent CPU? No money has been wasted at all trying the GPU upgrade first.

I feel like some people would rather "socially network" and potentially get the wrong answer slowly, rather than just use google and get the right answer immediately.

Start looking at an upgrade path. Which for you would be a freesync supported monitor. Wouldn’t even bother upgrading anything else in your pc since you have a proprietary PSU that can’t really be upgraded easily. So for you I’d consider building your very own PC from scratch and turning your current one into an HTPC/Emulation machine. Coffee Lake and Ryzen are both looking very good so you can’t really go wrong with either red or blue team.
