Cool pc find today

Postby spreegun » Wed Feb 21, 2018 5:54 pm

So im pulling into work today (i do landscaping in this big retirement facility thing) and they usualy throw away tvs and stuff by my tool shed, and today i see a pc there. At first i didnt think it was gonna be good. You know they are usualy just some cheep office pc's. but i always check them to see if they have any ide hdd's for xbox. So i walk over to it and i realize its a prety decent sised chassis.

So i open it up te see if theres a hdd in it(witch there wasnt) an i notice its got a geforce 9 1gb grafix card... and a video card... and what looks like at least 4gb of ram... and dule layer dvd RW drive, and an LG blue-ray and hd dvd drive. :D

(Also the mobo has sata and ide ports... do you guys know if mother bords like this work well with xbox hard drive maker?)

Looks like someone's old gaming pc to me. Its got an asus mobo i cant see anything indicating what kind of cpu its got but ill check it when i get home and plug it in to see ifiut works. (Hopefully it does)

I took some pics for you guys let me know if you recognize the mobord and what typ of cpu it might have and if you recognive any ither parts. Im also not too familiar with pc stuff so let me lnow if What i got is any good. Thnx :lovetiz:

And sorry for thw spelling mistakes im on my phone and dont feel like fixing them all :p

looks alright, video card is plugged into AGP port?
whats the memory?
i would blow that thing out with air compressor, then clean outside, but be prepared for a "problem" once you boot it

those are IDE cables for sure by the look of them

Those cables look like the 80 pin cables.
The pics show the video card plugged into 2 different places. You have 2 pics of it. According to what the motherboard shows, that card has to go into the blue slot. The black slot is if you wanna run in SLI.

DO NOT TURN IT ON WITH THE CARD IN A DIFFERENT SLOT!!!

You could turn it on with the card in the black slot, as the black and blue slots are designed for that. Probably wouldn't get a video signal tho if plugged into the black slot. Put into a PCI slot? (The white slots) Don't know the output on those and it may send voltage someplace that it shouldn't go.

At any rate, as stated by Dildo, hit it with an air compressor, but don't let the fans turn while doing that. The fans were never designed to turn with a 100psi hitting them.

Kinda reminds me of the dual core Dell Optiplex that was given to me. It was an old server for a business, and he didn't need it anymore. The MB in it doesn't have the goodies that the one you found does, but still, never had a dual core with 6 drive bays I couldn't find a use for...

Did you turn it on ? You don't need a hard disk to get into BIOS and see what motherboard and CPU it has.

Let's see if I can clarify things a bit for you:

- The motherboard is an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe, it's a nice mobo and it was pretty high end in its moment but it has some years and is for old AMD processors (the 939 series from like 12 years ago); the videocard goes in the blue slot, the black is only for when you install two cards in SLI (and you have to flip the card that looks like a laptop memory that's between the two slots).
- The graphic card looks like a nvidia 9600GT, not bad but outdated.
- The assortment of optical units is nice, if I was you I'll keep the mixed Bluray-HD DVD unit, they weren't common in their days and they're very rare now.
- I don't know if they'll work good in the XBOX, but Asus usually bundle goog quality IDE cables with their mobos, specially high end ones like this.
- The memory is Corsair DDR XMS, it was hight quality memory, if they're 1GB modules they still have value.
- And last, the case is by LianLi, probably the best known high quality case makers, if it's in good state it can fetch a pretty penny

All in all I'll say that this was a very neat gaming machine some time ago, assembled by someone with money and that know what he's doing, so if it was in the trash it's very possible that it doesn't work, but it has some parts worth saving.

Great find, I'm sure it's glad it found you. I used an ASUS 18" IDE cable just like yours in a XBOX the other day, tight but it worked just fine. The slave was a bit closer to the short end so it fits ok, they seem very good quality to me.

Yeah...
Check the settings in the BIOS to see what Vid/ Graphics card is booting 1st and from where/ what slot?
Check both cards if both are installed.
Then verify the output cables are going to the correct place, AND if the cables work.

The IDE cable marked for Hard Drive use is an 80-wire 40-pin high-speed cable. The CDROM labeled cable is a standard slower speed IDE 40-wire 40-pin.
