New thrift store find!

New thrift store find!

Postby wshirk » Sun Feb 25, 2018 12:29 am

So I went to a sale at my local goodwill just this last week, and everything in the store was 50% off. I got there around 2pm, and while it was busy it was not as crazy as their last 50% off sale. Right as I walked in I noticed a computer a dell, that was sitting right on a shelf by the checkouts, and so I went to give it a look over. To my surprise it was a dell OptiPlex 745 just the same as I currently had, but with a core 2 duo e6600 at 2.4 Gigahertz with a 1066 megahertz FSB. Needless to say I picked up the computer for 15 dollars, which is what I had picked the first one up for at DI. The first one was running on a Pentium D 945 at 3.4 gigahertz with an 800 megahertz FSB. I checked the CPU temperature with Speedfan, and the cores stay at about 18-23, and while encoding video, both cores go 100 percent, but the cores max out at 40, and never go above. I have wondered if someone pasted the CPU, as those temps seem better than stock, especially on a computer this old. Anyways thanks, and have a nice day/night whichever it is for you!

Yep some of the Pentium D's do have dual core support. The other OptiPlex 745 I had had the Pentium d 945 dual core at 3.4 Gigahertz, and while I did like it, I immediately noticed, how this new dual core 2.4 gigahertz core 2 duo with 1066 FSB was snappier in completing tasks, and speed altogether

Those temps i would consider normal for a core duo.
I assume its Celsius as my 755 hovered around 30.
It had an e6550.
You can upgrade the cpu to a quad, tho you'll need the copper type heat sink for it.
You don't mention the case type.
If it's a mini tower, you'll have to be careful what graphic card you upgrade too as the plastic shroud will interfere & you can't cut it.However a geforce 1030 fits tho it's not plugged in all the way at the end due to that blasted shroud, runs fine tho.An amd 6670 will fit perfectly if its a slim type with the adapter bracket fitted.
There'll most likely be bios updates for it at dell as well.It will be needed if upgrading the cpu & there may be another reason tho it will be in the summary

Your right, I did leave out some details! The core 2 duo's temperatures are in Celsius, the case is a mini tower, and I have an Nvidia GeForce 9400GT. I play tomb raider anniversary at 1920 by 1200, and a max of 8A antialiasing, and I also played legend, but trying to find just the right movement with the mouse, not to fast, and not too slow. Eventually I might upgrade to a quad, but that might be a while out, Anyways thanks for the advice on the copper heatsink, ill make a mental note of that if I ever do decide to switch the processors

You use what you have at hand & having a separate computer to do the vid task will mean he can set the encoder to use 100% of the cpu instead of scaling back if it was the only computer he had.As scaling back allows the use of other programs. The dual core is fine for encoding.

I am into the preservation of movies, as I own 300 of them or more on dvd, so I put them on the computer, so that I can watch them, as some of my favorite movies are borderline playable, but they will play without issues. I gave the 745 with the Pentium D to my father, and we both have 2.5 gigs of ram in our systems, and no this is not the only system I own. I own a dell inspiron 1720 laptop with Bluetooth 2.1+EDR internal wifi with 3 antennas built in, 2 gigs of ram, an core 2 duo t7500 5 usb ports, sd card reader, dvd drive, pmcia slot, and two Sata HDD bays, It also had the ability to hook up to cellular networks, though I am missing the Card that enables that.

Holy shit ! 2gb of frak'n ram ! Is that a 32bit ? Naaaah man you gotta switch to x64 up the ram to at least 4gb , 8 is better (may not be needed) & watch that biatch fly . Yes you will notice the difference by adding more ram,i did.Keep an ear to the ground for some ram.It should be ddr2
