Suggestions for a new wifi router (with 4g capabilities)

Postby TheTechDoc » Mon May 21, 2018 9:22 am

Hey guys and gals, so if you don't know, internet in Australia is a festering pile of garbage so big it lords over us and laughs at the Australian people.

So to finally get passed ADSL 1 speeds (850kbps) I'm planning to use Vodafone's new unlimited mobile data plan (120gb uncapped 4g speed then capped at 1.5 after that...still miles better than what I have now)

The problem is, finding a 4g dongle that will work with my router...to which I found out there is none, only 3g, I've tested it with my brother's Vodafone Sim and a 3g dongle and unfortunately I only get 2mpbs on speed tests, my internet now shows 7mbps (but real speeds at 850kbps, so I can only imagine how slow it'll be with this 3g dongle)

Right now I have a TP Link TD-w8970 which apparently supports 4g but only states 3g mode in settings and doesn't appear to have a 4g dongle on the compatibility list at all so *shrugs*

So! Can anyone suggest me a cheap, half decent router that will allow for 4g dongles? And if so (and this I know is a long shot) one that works with the Huawei E3372 USB dongle...only cus I already own it and it saves me spending even more money, but if not then just any half decent 4g router,

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks guys!

My reply doesn't cover your original question, but WOW! :o I really didn't know that internet speeds are that appalling there in "down under". I'm shocked, to be honest.
I've been using my 150Mbit/s 4G connection for almost 3 years now here in Finland and my current operator has even 300Mbit/s connections available for 4G. Have been worked like a charm so far.

I went to a Pawnshop and recently found a netgear n600 for 5 bucks. it has 5g wireless n, Not a huge drop from wireless AC but I think a router that cost triple digits should let you install your own OS/firmware.

Yeah, routers don't have 4g capabilities.

yes they do: https://www.google.com.au/search?q=4g+r ... e&ie=UTF-8

just not all of them.

also to everyone else who actually knows what they are talking about, I found this little thing: https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-4g-w ... -7EALw_wcB

was considering using this to power my main router (this carries the connection with wifi off, wired to my main router, set up as a wired repeater, and my main router then works as normal to feed my other 2 routers in the house etc
