WiFi vs Ethernet

Postby Muz » Wed Mar 14, 2018 4:00 pm

Which of these is your choice? I heard plant seeds don't grow near WiFi router.

I use both - depending on what I'm doing.

As for plants and wifi...

I have my desktop hooked up with a wire because my comp is ancient and has a really old adapter and the signal used to get cut off easily. However phone, tablet, laptop are on Wi-Fi of course.

Wifi, the router is too far away so I use an extender.

I have a wired connection for my desktop, Xbox One S, and my fiancée computer. The rest of the house uses WiFi. If and when I buy a house, I’m making a wired connection available in every room lol. Much more stable and faster in my personal experience.

Wired for my PC, wi-fi for phone, tablet.
I would agree with catch about the speed and reliability of a wired connection, far superior to wi-fi.

I prefer wired where possible, however in my current situation I have the choiche of 2 poisons in form of eithe W-Lan or D-Lan (Network over the main power system of the house) and since W-Lan is faster and more stable I picked that one.

Wifi is crap when trying to stream games though.

I think both have their good and bad points.

Wired all the way, unless im just streaming

For what purpose?

This usually depends on hardware and isp service.

If your service is slooow, most will run wired as much as possible to reduce packet loss that happens naturally with wifi

If you have a crappy router, wifi will suck no matter what.

@Catch, Agreed.
I ran cat6 into every room using shallow wall boxes and ran the wiring under floor in basement to a NID interface. Just need a switch now to run em:)

It's all about the router. I recently bought a tri-band router and now my speeds are as fast as a wired connection. I get can up to 8mb a second now and no more disconnects. Cost $200, but was worth it.

There is a time and place for both, for me.

Though even when it's difficult to run a cable, and WiFi might work ok, I might still be prone to using a HomePlug, assuming of course that the device can use both ethernet and WiFi.

That is my plan for this summer. I moved back in the fall and plan to install ethernet jacks throughout the house.

my house rules (when that day finally comes):
if it has an ethernet jack that is perfectly working, best route a cable and plug in. wireles-only devices will be the only things on my wifi :-)
