Windows can't find the file or folder, try again? Solution

Postby ZX81v2 » Thu Jun 21, 2018 11:53 am

Okay this is an odd one I have personally encountered using NTFS and Win7 64bit. Took me a while to suss this, but here is a solution... Oh, okay, what's the problem?

Image

Windows copied a folder and something went wrong, I ended up with a folder on desktop that I could not
a. Access
b. Delete
c. Find
All I want to do is delete it

The folder somehow ended up with a fullstop as end letter in name, totally screwed windows file system. I wouldn't mind but it contained over 7gig of files I couldn't access or delete.
As usual, M$ complete waste of time....
But here is a way that works using a good ol' BATCH file

Code: Select all
rd /s "\\?\C:\<Insert PATH HERE >"

IF you set the path name correctly, you'll get a confirm delete cmd line open, press Y, Return
you'll prob get some error messages, folder not empty, ignore them. This stage is deleting the files in the folders
Run again to remove the remaining folder(s)

you need the \\?\ before the path
ie rd /s "\\?\C:\Users\ZX81v2\Desktop\locked folder."
or rd /s "\\?\E:\Locked folder" etc...

Be warned, using this command incorrectly can delete files that shouldn't easily be deleted.
Make sure path is 100% correct before turning into a bat file !

So 1st run deletes the files in the folder you specified
2nd run removes the folders from the path specified

File Assassin is a lot quicker and would've save you a lot of headache. It can delete stuff you're not normally able to delete.

Thanks for the solution. I would usually boot into safe mode or boot a Linux distro to solve issues like this.

The other thing that works, I forgot to mention, is having a dual-boot machine. In my case it's XP and Win7. Whichever OS the file or folder is being a pain in, boot to the other and delete it that way. Works every time.....
