Just use 7zip and TRIAL version of WinRAR
No 3rd party programs required...

7-zip.org
winrar.com

Winrar only nags you when you crunch something, right mouse, WinRar > Extract here

7zip is the best program for crunching files

WinRAR handles RAR files and some cause 7zip issues (latest version) so it's worth having bOTH programs, but basically 7zip can handle rar files, 90% of the time.

Nothing stops working in winRar after trail runs out, just a nag screen

In my experience 99% of the time 7Zip has no problems at all with unpacking RAR files.

In fact recently I had found an UnleashX skin supplied as a RAR, copied that to Xbox which also can open RARs as well as ZIPs but it refused to open. Sometimes this is due to one file that UnleashX doesn't like but this was different, it would not unpack anything from the RAR at all.

However it unpacked on PC fine with 7Zip. I then, as a test, I repacked it as a normal ZIP with 7Zip, transferred that to the Xbox and it unpacked there without issue.

In short it is certain RARs which are the problem not 7Zip.

Where the hell are you downloading your programs from ? Literally the first "rar" search option gets you directly to the website of WinRar. Also if you have already been "burnt" and haven't even tried 7-Zip... what the hell were you even trying to use ? Not only are these two the most widely used, but they are free to use ! Please tell us so we can all have a good laugh.

I know I may sound rude, but "Can't find a rar unpacker, without getting his computer infected"... it just blows my mind !

Ad revenue=Site existing

I'd say it's a good thing. Some days.

Fun fact about Winrar: The company doesn´t care that people don´t buy it neither do they expect that. The "unlimited 40 Day Trial" is part of their business model. The fact that people doewnload and use it keeps them on top of the download charts and they make their money with other businesses.

^^ This comment is 99% true :)
However, there are some files that use none standard compression settings, which only latest WinRar understands. However, as 7-zip gets updated, these problems will go away in time...

Try to open a rar5 with 7zip you get header errors and data after payload warning... OR extraction error
WinRar extracts fine...

Also to note : WinRar compresses Audio files a little better than 7zip... This is why you get so many albums in RAR format
