How do you setup a ps2 hard disk?

Postby Garryg » Wed Jan 11, 2017 2:09 pm

I recently got a ps2 network interface and added a 10Gb HDD with a ps2 iso image burnt onto it.
Should the HDD be recognised immediately once a hard disk is installed through the network interface, or do I have to get the HDD install disk and use this to update the browser to version 2.00 first?

Sorry if this appears a silly question, but many posts and videos are vague and confusing on this!

Okay,
If your using a SLIM/USB HDD you use the USB software
If your using a Phat PS2 with Network Adapter, use WinHIIP to format the drive correctly
> http://theisozone.com/downloads/playsta ... nhiip-usa/ < WinHIIP
FAT32/NTFS don't work on Internal HDD, must be SONY Format
Also make sure that the JUMPER on the back of the IDE Drive is set to (CS) Cable Select for less issues when plugging into PC. MASTER works as well but can cause issues if you plug nto a PC Directly as IDE Jumper means a lot on old systems ! (MASTER = BOOT Drive)

CS works no matter. If your drive is set to SLAVE, the PS2 will not see it !

At the end of the day, there are no silly questions when you are first learning to do stuff, only hypocrites who don't remember that THEY asked the same sort of questions !

It's been years since I modded my PS2 but I believe I used the program called HD Loader to format the drive I use in my PS2 Fatboy.

I use HD Loader, but what do I use to format a larger hard drive? HD Loader only formats up to a certain allotment of HD space for games. I have a 500 gb drive and only using a fraction of it.

HDLoader 0.8C

This can format 48bit
WinHIIP was MADE for HDL users in mind, long before OPL existed
Also it can format 48bit for larger HDD 's

I still use it on my SATA Conversion with a 2TB HDD connected via a USB docking Station on PC to transfer lots of ISO files

Guide to 24/48 bit formats
HDD's smaller than 128gig use 24Bit format
HD's BIGGER than 128gig use 48bit format
ie 720gig HDD = 48bit
10gig HDD = 24bit

THIS BIT IS FOR PHAT/NETWORK ADAPTER USERS ONLY!

SO you need some way of connecting your PS2 HD to PC - I would recommend a USB IDE HDD Caddy (Case) for easy transfer to and from PC

Once you have access to such a device (Or IDE Motherboard Socket - Set HDD Jumper CS)
Plus int PC and load WinHIIP (Win7 and above - make sure you give WinHIIP Admin rights!)

OPTIONS button
IF HDD smaller than 128gig select OVERRIDR APP as 24bit. BIG Drives Select 48bit
This way WinHIIP Can't wrongly detect size.
Tick Enable Extended compatibility modes
Click OK

Select Drive button > Make sure you select the USB Drive
It may say No PS2 HDD Partition found, click ok
Now click the FORMAT Button making sure you have the CORRECT DRIVE SELECTED ! YOU CAN'T RECOVER DATA IF YOU MESS UP !

Once you clicked the format button it will ask you what type of format
Quick Partial or FULL

first time you use a drive, do FULL
then you use Partial to remove all the ISO's
Quick can do weird things on some IDE HDD's

Once done you will get 2 pop up messages saying DO NOT INSTALL GAMES
It's correct - don't
CHECK THE FREE SPACE TALLIES WITH HDD !
If it didn't, format it again (But it should be fine)

Plug the drive back into PS2 and load HDLoader 0.8c
It should now detect it and it will be correct size
HDL basically sets the drive flags so now you can plug back into PC, install ISO's plug back into PS2 and load em with NO Problems other than compatibility
To get to Compatibility settings in HDL0.8C - Press SELECT on a game

One last thing - the FIRST time you load HDL with a LOAD of NEW Stuff - It can take AGES to read and build the drive data. It's NOT CRASHED - MAKE TEA !
If you reset, next boot will take same time from scratch !
...on a 2TB drive this took over 3 hours to build the data HDL requires !
(Okay , over 500 gmaes installed, but what you want for tech nearly 20 years old lol)
A complete guide :)

Re: How do you setup a ps2 hard disk?

Postby Garryg » Wed Jan 11, 2017 11:29 pm

Thanks for all the reply's, but that wasn't really what I was asking. I'm probably not wording it right!

I'm using the old 'fat' PS2 with a network interface and a 10Gb IDE hard disk.
I have put a PS2 image on a hard disk already, e.g. I'v copied the iso to the hard disk and checked this with WinHIIP and it says it is a PS2 disk and that it is error free.

The Version information in my PS2 says the Browser is at version 1.20 when the network adapter containing the (PS2 formatted, and apparently auto-bootable PS2 disk image) hard disk is installed.

My question is should the hard disk drive be recognized and work at this stage, auto updating the Browser Version Information to 2.00, or do I have to install something (a browser driver update?) from the Official PlayStation 2 Hard Disk install CD first, in order to update the Browser version to 2.00 before the hard disk will be recognized at all?

Basically I'm trying to find out if the network adapter is working (for both network and hard disk use).
I have the Network interface installation CD, but not the hard disk drive installation CD.
Should the Link light come on immediately when a live RJ-45 network cable is plugged into this adapter, as this is not happening, so I'm not sure if the network adapter is dead or not!

The iso image I burned to the hard disk is from the /forums/f153/softmodding-fat-ps2-hard-disk-drive-%5Btutorial%5D-116178/ page at psx-scene.

Right, okay we have a lot more info now.
First question, why do you want browser 2?
Just use 1.20 and OPL 0.9.x and a FREEMCBOOT Card
(x being latest revision)

As soon as it's formatted it should show, even in HDL
OPL would display a blank "Internal HDD" page with HDD icon at top

Chances are if HDL don't see it now, network adapter could be an issue

If you know how to ADD ELF Files to your FREEMCBOOT card you can add OPL to it to test
but you will have to setup E1 settings to be able to load it from a button press when FMCB Logo appears

The Network Disk that comes with adapter is useless. Place in it's sleeve and file it :)
It's 100% redundant.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I was told that the Browser had to be updated to 2.00 before a Hard Disk Drive would be recognized, as if it wasn't at version 2.00 the Hard Disk Icon wouldn't show up in the browser.

So you are saying a properly working network adapter should allow a properly formatted hard disk to be seen, irrespective of the browser version?

I'm assuming an improperly formatted disk wouldn't show up at all?

Also any idea about the Link and ACT lights on the network adapter, should these come on whenever the PS2 is connected to a network? Or do these only activate when the network is being used?

I suspect the network addapter to be dead (I got it from an Amazon store!)

Which of these are you currently using?

Mod chip
Free McBoot
FHDB
HDD OSD

If none, which are you trying to set up? The PS2 won't do anything with the hard drive without some sort of exploit or app installed. Copying an ISO to the drive with WinHIIP is just the second step, after you already have a modded setup.

The easiest way to get an unmodded system to run games from the hard drive is to install FMCB to the memory card (with the noobie installer package) and run HD Loader. It will list the games on the drive, very simple.

You could install an FHDB image (which is like Free McBoot but runs directly off the HDD) which would allow you to use the hard drive right away and put games on it. Keep in mind that a 10gb HDD is quite small and I believe the FHDB image takes up a like 7 gigabytes of space. Anyway, if you want to try it and see how it works then search FHDB Noobie Package.

Oh, and while you're at it, future proof your Network adapter by getting a SATA interface adapter for it. Just go to MAXDIYPower dot net and look for the "SATA adapter for PS2 Network Adapter" under "Video Games consoles parts. WHile you're at it, get the HDD mounting kit as well, which will allow you to use 2.5" laptop drives and help keep them secure inside the HDD bay. I've been using mine for almost 2 years now with the 500GB that originally came in my PS4 after I upgraded it to a 1TB drive. I can't recommend it enough!

THey also make a SATA interface kit for the slim that allows you to connect external SATA drives to it, but you need to be a freakin' soldering PRO to solder the ribbon cable to the motherboard.

A FreeMCBoot card is all you need. If you have one you can use any softmod type you want and STILL have a way back in if things fek up !

I can make you a FMCB card if required (UK)
It seems you have been told "Harder" ways of modding a PS2.
FreeMCBoot, Plug in to MC Slot, Turn on, Load OPL/HDL, Play Games. No fekking about with HDD Images or such.

Also you can make a BACKUP of a FMCB card simply enough, so even if you do manage to fek one up, you have a backup. If Interested in this approach, let me know

The instructions I got were to softmod the PS2 from a self boot CD image. But the PS2 needs to recognize the HDD before you can do this from the HDD boot!
I was then planing on making a FreeMCBoot MC from this anyway, so getting this on a MC would be usefull.
